Google Docs word count excludes content in headers, footers, and footnotes. It also doesn't count symbols--such as the "<" or ">" signs--as words; however, it does count em dashes.
If you want to delete the footnote (that's at the bottom of the page), delete the number “1” in the body. When you do that, the footnote itself disappears. Another way you can do this is to right-click the footnote at the bottom of the page, select Go to Footnote and then delete the number there.
The count of pages for the purpose of the required work does not count the reference pages, even though when you set the numbers in each page it will place a number.

Word count includes everything in the main body of the text (including headings, tables, citations, quotes, lists, etc). The list of references, appendices and footnotes2 are NOT included in the word count unless it is clearly stated in the coursework instructions that the module is an exception to this rule.
