Any model of iPhone newer than the iPhone 6 can download iOS 13 – the latest version of Apple's mobile software. The list of supported devices for 2020 includes the iPhone SE, 6S, 7, 8, X (ten), XR, XS, XS Max, 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. Various "Plus" versions of each of these models also still receive Apple updates.

The next update to Apple's iOS could kill support for older devices like the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s Plus, and the original iPhone SE. According to the report from French site iPhoneSoft, Apple's iOS 15 update will seemingly drop support for devices with an A9 chip when it launches later in 2021.
Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Your iOS device will then automatically update to the latest version of iOS overnight when it's plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi.
Plug your iPhone into a power socket, and connect to a Wi-Fi network. Tap Settings > General > Software Update. Tap 'Download and Install' Tap 'Install' to update immediately, or tap 'Later' and choose 'Install Tonight' to update while your phone is plugged in overnight.
More than two and a half years after its release,
iOS 12 continues to receive regular security updates for older devices that do not
support iOS 13, with the latest 12.5. 3 update released on May 3, 2021.

Apple's iPhone 6 from 2014 and older iPhone models won't be getting iOS 13 when it rolls out on September 19. That's a decent reason to upgrade if you have the iPhone 6 or older, as it means you won't get the latest features and improvements that come with new versions of iOS.
Developers are still rolling out iOS 14 support updates so if you're having issues with one of your apps, make sure you're running the latest version. As of right now, iOS 14.5 is running smoothly on our device. We're recommending iOS 14.5 to most iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus users.
To update your device, make sure your iPhone or iPod is plugged in, so it doesn't run out of power midway through. Next, go to the Settings app, scroll down to General and tap Software Update. From there, your phone will automatically search for the latest update.
How to downgrade to an older version of iOS on your iPhone or iPad
- Click Restore on the Finder popup.
- Click Restore and Update to confirm.
- Click Next on the iOS 13 Software Updater.
- Click Agree to accept the Terms and Conditions and start downloading iOS 13.
Apple says that iOS 14 can run on the iPhone 6s and later, which is the exact same compatibility as iOS 13.
As a rule of thumb, your iPhone and your main apps should still work fine, even if you don't do the update. Conversely, updating your iPhone to the latest iOS could cause your apps to stop working. If that happens, you might have to update your apps too. You'll be able to check this in Settings.
We've been using iOS 12 on the iPhone 6 since September of 2018 and we're still pretty blown away by the upgrades Apple made to the operating system. iOS 12.5. 3 is performing well on the iPhone 6 models in our possession.
If your iPhone won't update to iOS 14, it might mean that your phone is incompatible or doesn't have enough free memory. You also need to make sure that your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi, and has enough battery life. You may also need to restart your iPhone and attempt to update again.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
- Plug your device into power and connect to the Internet with Wi-Fi.
- Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
- Tap Download and Install.
- To update now, tap Install.
- If asked, enter your passcode.
If you still can't install the latest version of iOS or iPadOS, try downloading the update again: Go to Settings > General > [Device name] Storage. Find the update in the list of apps. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and download the latest update.
