With double the zinc* level of current low-viscosity, API-approved passenger car oils, Mobil 1 Racing oils form a protective sacrificial layer on steel surfaces to protect against engine wear during metal-to-metal contact.
If your older vehicle has an engine that uses a flat tappet lifter, it will need to have zinc or a zinc replacement additive in its engine oil. Having zinc in the engine oil will prevent the lifters and camshaft from wearing down prematurely.
More info. I've been using Mobil 1â„¢ 15W-50 in my race car. Additionally, Mobil 1 Racing oils offer boosted levels of antiâ€wear protection (nominal zinc level of 1,850 ppm) for extra engine protection in highly loaded flat tappet engine designs like those used in the NASCAR® Sprint Cup series.
Minimun PPM is
about 1300 to 1600. I read, somewhere else, that Castrol GTX 20/50 has about 1/2 the ZDDP that our cars require, so add the MOSS ZDDP additive to every oil change.

Diesel oils with API credentials of CI-4, CI-4 Plus, CJ-4 will typically have Zinc levels around 1100 parts per million (ppm). Diesel oil is designed with much higher levels of detergency and dispersency to fight the soot contamination.
Quaker State Defy Synthetic Blend Motor Oil has zinc and is an outstanding wear fighter in engines.
High Zinc Levels Reduce Wear
Using high quality lubricant base oil, advanced additive technology, and an understanding of the lubrication needs of classic cars, we have designed an engine oil just for them. Recommended for use in cars with catalytic converters.Do you need zinc in your car's oil? It depends on how old your engine is and how you use it. A zinc oil additive will provide improved wear protection for just about any engine, and is an absolute necessity when it comes to older models, especially those with flat-tappet camshafts.
Most Shell Rotella engine oils, including T6 5W-40 Full Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil, contain approximately 1200 ppm of zinc which will benefit older and high-performance engines.
Add 16 oz.of TB Zinc-Plus Engine Break-In Additive to 4.5 quarts of motor oil to achieve approximately 5,000 ppm of Zinc.
Valvoline MaxLife 10W-40 stands out as the best oil for old motors. Valvoline comes with enhanced additives. The additives enable your motor to perform better. It comes with seal conditioners that prevent leaks.
Castrol motor oil contains a zinc compound, zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate(ZDDP). This oil additive provides better anti-wear protection in your engine, especially the high load areas like the camshaft and lifters.
Yes, you can use diesel oil in a gas engine, provided the diesel oil meets the appropriate specifications and viscosity requirements of your engine.
Diesel oils have to put up with much higher engine temperatures, higher oxidation rates, sulfur deposits, fuel soot, acids and other deposits and conditions not usually found in automobile engines. It's because diesel oils fail in one critical area when used in gasoline engines.
It is safe to use a diesel oil in your gasoline engine, provided the diesel oil meets the appropriate specifications and viscosity requirements of your engine.
Our Rotella T4 15W-40 (CK-4) contains about 1200 ppm of zinc and 1100 of phosphous. These are the components of the ZDDP for anti-wear protection. Rotella T4 15W-40 (CK-4) is generally recommended for older flat tappet cam motors."
The Viscosity
Generally, diesel engine oil has a higher viscosity and lower-temperature pumpability when compared to gas engine oil. If it was used in gas engines, several issues might develop, such as heat generation, premature wear & tear, and more.Use a 5w-30 or 10w-30 motor oil with an engine break-in additive (ZDDP or zinc camshaft additive), especially with flat tappet camshafts.
> The only difference in the T-4 oil and the T-5 is the T-5 is a synthetic blend.
Shell Rotella® T4 Triple Protection® synthetic blend engine oil has been formulated to provide Triple Protection technology against wear, deposits and oil breakdown, plus provides a fuel economy benefit* Shell Rotella® T4 Triple Protection® oil uses advanced additive technology plus synthetic base oil to protect under
Shell ROTELLA 550019907-3PK T5 10W40 Synthetic Blend Heavy Duty Engine Diesel Oil - 1 Gallon, Pack of 3.
Synthetic oils are so slippery that there is less force to turn the lifter. So, theoretically, synthetic oil could cause problems for flat-tappet cams. The real-world warning comes from cam manufacturers.
Valvolineâ„¢ VR1 Full Synthetic Racing Motor Oil is easily distinguished by its sapphire blue color, but the real difference is the track-proven, high zinc additive package engineered to increase horsepower and provide extreme wear protection.
