After Dutch navigators charted the northern, western and southern coasts of Australia during the 17th Century this newly found continent became known as 'New Holland'. It was the English explorer Matthew Flinders who made the suggestion of the name we use today.
The term Outback came about in the 19th Century. It was used to refer to places that were 'out the back of X (insert a place name). A similar term is 'back of beyond'. Basically, it's somewhere inland in Australia, a long way from the sea.

Australia comprises a land area of about 7.692 million square kilometres. Although this is just five per cent of the world's land mass (149.45 million square kilometres), Australia is the planet's sixth largest country after Russia, Canada, China, the United States of America and Brazil.
Apart from PNG, Indonesia, East Timor, French New Caledonia, and New Zealand, the neighbours of Australia include many of the more south-western Pacific nations, such as Fiji, Nauru, etc. And beyond Indonesia, there are the other south-east Asian nations.
Lake Hillier on Middle Island, Australia, is the color of bright-pink bubble gum. Researchers recently discovered that the lake's unique color is caused by algae, halobacteria, and other microbes. Additionally, this body of water is extremely salty—just as salty as the Dead Sea.
While it may not be one of the biggest or the tallest waterfalls in the world, Niagara Falls is definitely one of the most well-known and most visited. In comparison, Victoria Falls is the world's largest sheet of falling water and is almost double the height of Niagara Falls and half a kilometer wider.
The 5 biggest and best waterfalls around the world
- Niagara Falls (USA and Canada, North America; 51 meters / 167 feet)
- Angel Falls (Venezuela, South America; 979 meters / 3,212 feet)
- Iguazu Falls (Argentina and Brazil, South America; 82 meters / 269 feet)
- Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe, Africa; 108 meters / 354 feet)
- Olo'upena Falls (Hawaii, USA; 900 meters / 2,953 feet)
Smallest waterfall in the world - Devi's Fall.
The Victoria Falls is considered to be the largest waterfall in the world. They are not the widest waterfall or the highest waterfall but with all dimensions taken into account, including almost the largest flow rate, they are considered to be the biggest curtain of falling water in the world.

Angel Falls, Venezuela
The world's tallest waterfall, Angel Falls cascades more than 3,000 feet from the top of a cliff in remote Canaima National Park, Venezuela.Often, waterfalls form as streams flow from soft rock to hard rock. This happens both laterally (as a stream flows across the earth) and vertically (as the stream drops in a waterfall). In both cases, the soft rock erodes, leaving a hard ledge over which the stream falls.
The water flows from streams and rivers that empty into the Great Lakes, from Lake Superior down through Niagara to Lake Ontario, then into the St. Lawrence River to the Atlantic Ocean.
Waterfalls are just sudden elevation drops in rivers, so the question is the same as "why do rivers never run out of water?" The answer is that some do. Rain will make its way to a major river from miles around, so even relatively small rainfalls can lead to a large volume of water going into a single river.
Waterfalls are commonly formed in the upper course of a river where lakes fall into in steep mountains. Because of their landscape position, many waterfalls occur over bedrock fed by little contributing area, so they may be ephemeral and flow only during rainstorms or significant snowmelt.
"Don't go chasing waterfalls" meaning, don't make stupid choices, and when they say: "Please stick to the rivers and lakes that you're used to" they mean do what makes your life better, do what you were meant to do, don't do something you will regret and be safe.
A waterfall is a river or other body of water's steep fall over a rocky ledge into a plunge pool below. Waterfalls are also called cascades. The process of erosion, the wearing away of earth, plays an important part in the formation of waterfalls.
Most people get tired especially during day and the negative ions from the waterfalls bring in calmness. They also help in reduction of the free radicals which cause the damage of cells, DNA and proteins in the body through the release of the negative ions. Waterfalls also help in reducing stress and depression.
Without similar protection, the next pool down began to erode, forming a vertical wall between the two—and thus, a waterfall. What's more, Crosby notes, these waterfalls lingered. Each lab-made cascade stuck around for about 20 minutes, a period of time that represents 10 to 10,000 years, according to the study.

According to Britannica, an island is a mass of land that is both “entirely surrounded by water” and also “smaller than a continent.” By that definition, Australia can't be an island because it's already a continent. Unfortunately, there isn't a strict scientific definition of a continent.
Australia has 8,222 islands within its maritime borders.
Australia, Zealandia, and New Guinea are continental islands.

of Australia's landscape. Apart from Antarctica, Australia is the driest continent in the world. About 35 per cent of the continent receives so little rain, it is effectively desert. In total, 70 per cent of the mainland receives less than 500 millimetres of rain annually, which classes it as arid, or semi-arid.
