In the search box on the taskbar, type Device Manager, then select Device Manager. Select the arrow next to Human Interface Devices and then select HID-compliant touch screen. (There may be more than one listed.) Select the Action tab at the top of the window.
“Tablet Mode” being on or off does not enable or disable a touchscreen display. It is also possible to have touchscreen hardware that is disabled in the Device Manager. If this system had one it would show up under Mice and other pointing devices and let you know if it was there but disabled.
It offers a range of processors, from the entry-level Intel Core M to the high-end Intel Core 7, a touchscreen display, support for pen input and more. It even has a built-in kickstand, so you can work or watch movies without the keyboard attached. The Surface Pro starts at $799 without a keyboard or pen.
Tablet mode optimizes your device for touch, so you can use your notebook without a mouse or keyboard. When Tablet mode is on, apps open full-screen and desktop icons are reduced.
The Surface Pro X comes a 2,880 x 1,920 (267 PPI), and the iPad Pro has a 2,732 x 2,048 (264 PPI) screen. That makes the Surface Pro X a better option for productivity, while the iPad feels a bit more square, making for a nicer tablet experience.
Compared to the base 13-inch MacBook Pro, though, the Surface Pro 7 is a better all-around device. Even with its must-have Type Cover accessory, it's cheaper when configured with comparable hardware, especially if you want to throw in some extra storage.
The Surface Pro 6, on the other hand, is a full-fledged laptop replacement, with all the pros and cons that come with being a Windows PC. But if you need the tools that only come in a full-strength desktop app, nothing less than a real laptop will do.
The biggest difference between the Surface Pro and the Surface Laptop comes in the keyboards. But the Surface Pro uses a detachable Type Cover, which connects with magnets. While the 1.3mm keys are the best you'll get on a detachable 2-in-1, the keyboard isn't as stable, especially when on your lap.
The Surface Book 2 is the best of the bunch, earning its higher price. Not only does its detachable design give you a real laptop (no kickstand here) and a full-fledged tablet, but it's the Surface with the most graphics power, which many creative professionals require.
Devices
| Line | Surface | Support lifespan |
|---|
| Surface Pro | Surface Pro 4 | > 5 years |
| Surface Pro (2017) | > 3 years, 4 months |
| Surface Pro 6 | > 2 years |
Ultimately, the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 is an excellent device and a great option for Windows fans who want to continue their experience in a more portable and tactile format. We do recommend the Type Cover to those who type a lot, but if you don't then you may not need to factor it into the cost.
If you need to do a large amount of typing or work with multiple software applications simultaneously, a laptop is probably your best bet. If you just need a device for internet browsing, keeping up with the news, or kicking back with your favorite movie, a tablet can easily accomplish that.
Microsoft aren't too far off with the premium prices of these Surfaces compared to Apple. Part of it is physical size, maybe a big part of it. Fitting the components into the smallest size takes a lot more engineering work than the same components in a physically larger device.
With some more juice, the Surface Laptop 3 would be hard to beat in this ultracompetitive category. As it is, though, the strong trackpad/keyboard combo, improved performance and snazzy (though little changed) design make the Laptop 3 worth the price tag.
If you are looking for a laptop replacement that can do everything a laptop can, then you'll likely lean to the Surface Pro 7. But the iPad Pro is the best detachable tablet in this face-off, even if its victory isn't by a huge margin.
