What do you need to rent a scooter in Thailand?

Yes, you CAN get a Thai driver's license on a Tourist Visa, despite what some websites will tell you. This is no possible on a tourist visa, you'll have to stick with temporary ones and renew every 2 years. Expect the unexpected when on the roads and always be vigilant whilst driving in Phuket. The main roads in Phuket are quiet good, most of them are flat and fast with a few areas that are quiet steep. The legal age for driving cars in Phuket is 18 years, although to ride a motorcycle up to 110cc it is only 15 years.
Indeed, they seem to be part of the problem in return for being allowed to operate: grab cars are even more expensive than the fixed fee taxis. Phuket is one place where I would consider it: You can rent a compact car for a day for as little as your one-way taxi to your hotel.

Technically you don't need a license to rent a scooter in Thailand. Renting one without a driver's license is possible.
By law in Thailand you are required to have a drivers license to operate a scooter of any size and by law you are required to have an IDP if your home country license is not fully in English. It doesn't matter where you rent or drive the scooter, the laws are nationwide. They don't really care about your license.

Driving into Hatyai and driving in Hatyai is very safe. As long as you observe traffic rules, no speeding and extra careful as you are driving in foreign country.

Insurance Options
There are two options of car insurance in Thailand: Compulsory Third-Party Liability Insurance and Private Insurance. Compulsory Third-Party Liability Insurance, known as Por Ror Bor, is required for all cars and motorcycles registered in Thailand.The train ride from Singapore to KL, Penang, southern Thailand & Bangkok is an epic 1,920 km or 1,233 miles, incredibly cheap & perfectly safe.
