Sturgeon. The recreational fishery for white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) remains open year-round. The daily bag and possession limit is one fish that must be between 40 inches and 60 inches fork length. The annual limit is three (3) sturgeon per person.
In 2006 the green sturgeon was listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act, making it off-limits for recreational fishing. Sturgeon can easily be targeted from shore using lures, live and dead baits. The best bait to use is Salmon Eggs, Freshwater Clams, Carcasses, Salmon Eggs, crawfish (freshwater Crayfish), and other smaller fish that can be located within the same habitat.
Sturgeon will bite through the tide but there are a few times during the tide swing when the fish are more active. Normally the last two hours of an outgoing tide is considered the best time. Living in a range of habitats, from subtropical to subarctic waters, sturgeons are found throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. They are bottom-feeders, eating small fish and invertebrates they find from sifting through silt or sand on the bottom of rivers and oceans.
Most sturgeon anglers will use what most call a sturgeon rig. Typically, this is a 18″ snell made of 60 lb line or leader material attached to a 5/0 circle hook. Circle hooks help to prevent gut hooking fish.

The largest Nechako white sturgeon on record was caught and released on the Nechako River near Vanderhoof, B.C., earlier this month. The spectacular fish measured 11'6 (352cm) fork length and 55†pectoral girth. Important to note, that fork length is the true standard for measuring on the Fraser in accordance with the Provincial government. This fish is the largest untagged Sturgeon recorded and the largest fish recorded on rod and reel.
