Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, fever, swollen glands, joint pain, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning in your eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling).
Using expired minocycline can cause damage to your kidneys.
To help clear up your infection completely, keep taking this medicine for the full time of treatment, even if you begin to feel better after a few days. If you stop taking this medicine too soon, your symptoms may return.
Minocycline, but not other tetracyclines, can cause vestibular disturbances with dizziness, ataxia, vertigo, and tinnitus. These effects are thought to be related to minocycline's greater penetration into the central nervous system.
Side-effects were recorded in 13.6%, and included vestibular disturbance, candida infection, gastrointestinal disturbance, cutaneous symptoms (pigmentation, pruritus, photosensitive rash and urticaria) and benign intracranial hypertension.
In the present study, we confirm the antidepressant effect of minocycline and reveal that chronic minocycline treatment reduces depressive-, but not anxiety-like, behavior and affects the gut–brain axis in a sex- and trait anxiety-dependent manner.
This medicine may cause an increased pressure in your head which can lead to permanent vision loss. Check with your doctor right away if you or your child has severe headache, blurred vision, or any vision changes. Contact your doctor immediately if fever, rash, joint pain, or tiredness occurs.
Research has found that tetracycline antibiotics, including minocycline, can inhibit inflammatory chemicals in the body that can affect acne.
It has anti-inflammatory effects, so if the immune system is doing more harm than good, minocycline might be able to protect the brain against it. And minocycline also reduces the tendency of cells to produce 'suicide signals' when they're damaged (a process called apoptosis).
It usually takes around 5.5 x elimination half-life (hours) before a drug is completely cleared from your system. So if we take the maximum elimination half life of 22 hours, it would take 121 hours (5.5 x 22 hours) approximately 5 days before the medicine is eliminated from your system.
Anxiety and panic attack are common side effects.
Also, drug-induced lupus is reversible. Symptoms generally resolve within months of stopping the medication. Unlike typical drug side effects, symptoms of drug-induced lupus don't happen right away. They may not start until you've been taking the medicine continuously for months or years.
However, minocycline may not work as well if you take it with food or milk, so ask your doctor or pharmacist if you may take it that way. If you are taking the capsules, swallow them whole. Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking this medication. For this reason, do not take it right before bedtime.
It's generally OK to drink alcohol in moderation while taking minocycline.
A 100 mg dose taken twice daily of either minocycline or doxycycline is also effective. Full-strength dosing should last for 3–4 weeks or until a response is noted, and a reduction to half strength is recommended until the rash is resolved, usually an additional 2–4 weeks.
The cutaneous hyperpigmentation may take months to years to fade after minocycline use is discontinued, and laser therapy can be used to improve the discoloration.
Don't lie down immediately after taking minocycline. Otherwise, it can irritate the esophagus, which is really painful. Give it time.
Moreover, minocycline has a good safety record when used chronically. Long-term treatment with minocycline at dosages of up to 200 mg·day−1, the highest dosage recommended by the US FDA, is generally safe and well-tolerated in humans.
