If you're switching to a shiny new NBN connection, in most cases you'll need to make sure you've got a VDSL2-ready modem. The exception is if you have a FTTP, HFC Cable, Fixed Wireless or Satellite NBN connection. These connections require their own sets of equipment, but do not require a modem.
There is a chance you can use your own modem router if the one you have includes an Ethernet WAN port. If you're lucky enough to have a modem router with an Ethernet WAN port, you may be able to reconfigure it for use with your nbn™ fixed wireless or satellite connection.

To keep it short, a good NBN modem should be a modem plus router – so that I can recive internet and can also distribute WIFI around the house. It should have at least three minimum ethernet points, one USB storage and a backup USB wifi dongle or 3g/4g/5g sim/dongle would be wishful.
you can use any router, though you'll require a TG797 or a TG799 if you wish to use Telstra for your home phone line as well. The phone line can then run out of the white NBN box instead of the Telstra 797/799 gateway so that your phone will still work in the event of a power blackout.
Re: Can I re-use a Telstra modem with another NBN service provider? You should be able to use the Telstra Modem for Internet service but you will not be able to use it VOIP function. The VOIP function only works with a Telstra voice service.
Re: Optus modem on TelstraSo, no. It won't work. It's like the Bigpond Mobile Broadband devices which were tied to the SIMs that they were originally issued with. They can't be unbound and used on another service (not even on the same network).
Optus internet plans have been using this Netgear Wi-Fi modem/router for a while now, which it offers free on almost all plans. Unusually for Optus, they've actually locked this down more than Telstra have with their modems. It can be unlocked, but takes a little work.
No you can't use a Telstra modem on the Optus network. The details won't be in the Optus system. You need an Optus cable modem.
If your old Optus modem, Sagemcom, is not locked with Optus, it will work as long as it is compatible with ADSL2+ connection.
It's not "locked" to Telstra, but it does have a fairly closed Telstra firmware on it. You'll have a difficult time getting it configured to work with any other provider for an ADSL/2/2+ service. But you'd be better getting an approved router for the ISP you're with.

Have experimented with using the MyRepublic – somewhat locked down TG789 hardware version 3 on Telecube as well as the iiNet hardware version 5 – less locked down, running much newer firmware. The MyRepublic modem seems to average ~5-10 mbps faster on an Ookla speedtest compared to the iiNet modem.
