Ukraine has had a bumpy few years, between revolutions and annexations, but the Foreign Office (FCO) maintains that Kiev is safe to visit, well, “generally calm”. Parts of Ukraine, including Crimea, are off-limits, according to the FCO.Militants who took over government buildings in Donetsk Oblast were consistently labeled as "separatists" and "terrorists" by the Ukrainian government and the western media, whilst Russian media and officials referred to as "supporters of federalization".
The most common definition in use today refers to the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine, whilst the historical coal mining region excluded parts of these oblasts, and included areas in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and Southern Russia.
