A lot of these later arrivals came from Jamaica's capital and largest city, Kingston where the divide between rich and poor is much more evident than other places on the island. Most first generation immigrants moved to Britain in order to seek and improved standard of living, escape violence or to find employment.

West Indians came to Britain for many different reasons. Some were seeking better opportunities for themselves and their children. Some came to work for a while, save money and return home. Some had been recruited because Britain was short of workers to run the transport system, postal service and hospitals.
The Windrush Compensation Scheme compensates individuals who suffered losses and/or impacts because they were unable to demonstrate their lawful status in the United Kingdom. There is no charge for making a claim for compensation under this scheme.

The two earliest ships of Chinese migrant workers to Jamaica arrived in 1854, the first directly from China, the second composed of onward migrants from Panama who were contracted for plantation work. The influx of Chinese indentured immigrants aimed to replace the outlawed system of black slavery.
Etymology. The name of the present town of Tilbury is derived (by way of the port) from the nearby settlements of East and West Tilbury. The name of these settlements is derived from the Saxon burgh, "fortified place", either belonging to Tila, or perhaps at a lowland place.
The most notable ship to arrive in the UK carrying migrants from the Caribbean was the MV Empire Windrush, which left Jamaica on May 24, 1948 and arrived at Tilbury dock on June 22, 1948. According to a passenger on the ship, the journey from Jamaica to the UK took about 22 days, which to them was a long journey.
Where does the River Windrush start?
In March 1954, after a fire on board, the Empire Windrush sank in the Mediterranean Sea with the loss of four men, while bringing home 1,500 servicemen from the Far East.
The Windrush scandal was a 2018 British political scandal concerning people who were wrongly detained, denied legal rights, threatened with deportation and in at least 83 cases wrongly deported from the UK by the Home Office.
