If you are not able to look for work, you may be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay or contributory (usually 'new style') Employment and Support Allowance. If you are not entitled to these, or need more help, you will usually have to claim Universal Credit.

No minimum hours of work: there are no minimum hours of work to claim Universal Credit, (as opposed to the Tax Credits system), however you are expected to try to earn at least the equivalent of 35 hours a week at the minimum wage (unless you are the primary carer for a child aged under 5, a disabled worker or a carer)
Types of housingIf you pay rent to a local authority, council or housing association you will get your full rent as part of your Universal Credit payment. This will be reduced by 14% if you have one spare bedroom, or 25% if you have 2 or more spare bedrooms.
Earnings and other income. Other money coming into your household will be taken into account when working out your Universal Credit payment. This includes your earnings, any capital you have and any other sources of income (such as from a retirement pension).
You do not count as living together unless you are living together in the same home as a couple. People are often told that if their partner stays over 2 or 3 nights a week that it counts as living together. It does not.

If you have less than £6,000 you'll have to declare it, but it won't affect your universal credit entitlement. Having between £6,001 and £16,000 will affect your universal credit amount, while anything more than £16,000 will stop you getting universal credit.

Your partner being visually impaired is probably why they think over the phone is a better option. It's not necessarly about someone making an accusation, it's more likely just a random check.
