Denny Hamlin enters the race as the 2019 Daytona 500 winner. Hamlin (+900) is currently the co-favorite to win this year's edition. The last driver to win this race in consecutive years was Sterling Martin in 1994 and 1995. Kyle Busch is the other co-favorite to win the 2020 Daytona 500.
Team Penske's Blaney said it was then that he committed to pushing Roush Fenway Racing's Newman to the finish line for a Ford victory, but the cars contacted wrong, causing the wreck. Newman's reeling car passed in front of Hamlin, who drove low to miss it. Hamlin then edged past Blaney for his photo-finish victory.
The frightening crash occurred when fellow Ford driver Ryan Blaney nudged Newman's No. 6 car ahead of Hamlin on the backstretch. But extra contact forced Newman to spin out, as his car flung violently into the wall and flipped into the air before being hit hard again by Corey LaJoie as he crossed the finish line.
