The competition formed as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992 following the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division to break away from the Football League, which was originally founded in 1888, and take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal.

Looking back over the past 24 seasons in which the Premier League has been competed over 38 matches, the average points total for the champions is 86.91. The lowest points total to win the league in a 38-game season was Manchester United's 75 in 1996-97.
Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United famously won a Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup Treble in 1999. However, no men's team has won all three major domestic competitions in one season in England before (Arsenal Women have won the domestic treble in the past).
Liverpool have been relegated three times in total. The first was in 1895, their first season in the top flight after the club formed in 1892. The reds finished 16th of sixteen teams in the First Division, winning just seven of their thirty matches.
