So he makes a plan to defeat him by convincing him that his son, Ashwathama was killed on the battlefield. After hearing this, he will disarm himself in grief. This plan of Krishna works as Bhima kills an elephant by the name Ashwathama while claiming it to be the son of Drona.
Pandavas come to a conclusion. They cannot kill Guru Drona, because he has his weapon in hand and he is their Guru, and at the same time, if left unattended, he can wipe the Pandava army with his misuse of powers. So, he had to be killed via deception.
