If you're interested in selling your old stereo equipment, remember, they aren't all worth lots of money. As a general rule, most transistorized equipment — mainly receivers from the 70's and 80's — are not worth as much as you'd like them to be.
Answer: When it comes to receivers and amplifiers, older can be better. The amplifier sections in new receivers often don't have the power and electrical current capability of vintage models, especially going from a stereo receiver to a surround sound receiver as you did.
In my opinion, old speakers can be just as good as new ones. I much prefer the sound of my Klipsch Heresy HBR's to the sound of most moderately priced speakers. Generally modern speakers have lower distortion and produce more bass in smaller enclosures.

Receivers allow you to manage the audio across more speakers, taking advantage of 5.1 and 7.2 channel audio options, while also amplifying that sound, and even performing single room correction on the signal, all of which improve sound quality.
Those can fetch between $100 and $200. Now, that said, some people take ones like yours apart and sell it off by the piece and get double or triple the "as is" value.
The quality vintage receivers like a Marantz 2270, Pioneer SX-1050, or Yamaha CR-1020 are usually more than adequate for the average living room. Stick with models in the 50-80wpc range. They're more affordable and not too huge to be unwieldy.

Most of the Optimus (not including Realistic) receivers I have seen are direct re-brands of contemporary Pioneer units. The Sony is demonstrably more detailed, offering a bigger scale of sound with more grunt, drive and low-end depth than the Denon can muster. Next to Sony's more robust character, the new Denon can sound a little delicate.
A 7.1 system is a great choice for larger rooms where sound may get lost in the space. It provides a deeper surround sound listening experience. Theater quality media designed for a 7.1 system will come through clearer than it would on a 5.1 system.
While Yamaha home theatre receivers excel on parameters like build quality & design, after-sales service, and shelf life, Onkyo wins by a slight margin in terms of sound quality produced. The low, medium and high frequencies are slightly more pronounced and the experience is a tad bit better.
AV Receivers do effect video quality. They can improve lower quality signals through video processing like up-scaling. But, they can also degrade quality by adding unnecessary video processing to signals that don't need it.
