Major League Baseball has informed its teams that the 2021 MLB Draft will be 20 rounds. That was expected news, as MLB negotiated with the Major League Baseball Players Association last year an agreement that this year's draft could be cut to as few as 20 rounds.
There will be a total of 160 picks in the 2020 Draft. The Draft usually runs 40 rounds but was shortened this year in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
The MLB Draft is one step closer to its regular format. The COVID-19 pandemic reduced the 2020 draft to just five rounds from the standard 40. This year, the draft will move up to 20 rounds, plus compensation picks and two competitive balance rounds, allowing 612 amateur baseball players to be drafted by MLB clubs.
The Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft is held every year in June by conference call among the 30 Major League Clubs. The Clubs take turns selecting players in reverse order of their won-lost records at the close of the previous regular season. The order of selection is without regard to League.

The five rounds of the 2020 MLB draft will be held over two days, June 10 and June 11. Both days will be televised by MLB Network. On June 10, the first 37 picks (the first round and the first competitive balance picks) will be announced, beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros have selected outfielder Tyler Whitaker with their first pick in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft. Whitaker, (6-4, 190), who has also played the infield, was selected in the third round of the Draft (87th pick).
