1) The cylinders/pistons are numbered from "1" at the front of the engine to "8" at the back in the order that the piston rods connect to the crankshaft.
They don't even have glow plugs but their large open chamber cylinders still fire the fuel just fine. That isn't the whole story though. If the glow plugs are inop the engine will run rougher and be noisier until it has a chance to warm up. They are not mandatory but they are a good thing.
Counting from the front of the engine to the back, cylinders 1, 3, 5 and 7 reside on the passenger-side cylinder head, while the driver side contains cylinders 2, 4, 6 and 8.
On a Duramax #7 is the closest cylinder/glowplug to the firewall on the passenger side of the vehicle.
#2 GP is the one close to the power steering pump-- Probably have to remove the inner fender skirt to see it.
LBZ Weak Links
The LB7 and LLY engines were known for rod weakness, but the LBZ had trouble with its cast-aluminum pistons. In higher-power applications, the pistons were very prone to cracking. LBZ Duramax upgrades with larger injectors and a larger turbo caused the majority of failures.Any generation duramax will pull a 3 horse trailer handily. They all have their own quirks and issues that can be resolved, and once they are, you've got a reliable, strong truck for many miles. Most will say the 06-07 LBZ model to be the most desirable and reliable platform.
More horsepower means faster acceleration whether you're towing or not. The current Duramax 6.6L L5P diesel wins this category with 445 horsepower. The current 6.7L 24V Ram Cummins diesel engines produce 400 horsepower. Historically, horsepower has swayed slightly in favor of the Duramax versus the Cummins line.
The Duramax L5P, the current model first released in the 2017 model year, easily takes the crown as the best Duramax engine yet produced. We'll discuss the many upgrades of the L5P at the end of this article. But first, let's survey the previous Duramax models and see just how far they've come.
The Duramax™ 6.6L V8 Turbo Diesel Engine is sold with a warranty of 100,000 miles/160,000 kilometers. The Duramax™ has been tested to survive upwards of 200,000 miles/320,000 kilometers.
The Duramax V8 engine is a family of 6.7 liter Diesel V8 engines produced by DMAX, a joint venture between General Motors and Isuzu in Moraine, Ohio.
Released in 2017, the L5P is the latest a greatest version of the Duramax. It is substantially more durable than previous Duramax models and features an impressive 445 HP and 910 lb-ft of torque. The L5P replaced the LML in Chevy Silverado pickup trucks.
What year Duramax has injector problems? The LB7 Duramax built from 2001 – 2004.5 is known for injector failure. The good news is the replacement injectors you purchase from us incorporate several updates to help prevent repeat failures.
LML is arguably a better engine but there are issues with DEF on all makes; Ford, Ram and GM. LMM emission controls have proved to be as reliable as any. I'd go with the newer truck but it's your decision.
L5P Tuning Package includes everything you need to tune your 2017 - 2021 L5P Duramax. No need to delete your EGR or tamper with emissions equipment to get the best performance out of your truck. No need to plug in a clunky box to re-flash your truck to change tunes.

Use a 7mm socket to losen the bolts on the wireharness plug and remove the plug from the ECM. For the LLY (04.5-05) pop the top off the pouch and unlatch the 3 wireharness plugs. The ECM will then slide of of the pouch. For the LBZ and LMM just unlatch the 2 wireharness plugs and remove the ECM.
TCM Tuning is the modification to the programming calibration of a Transmission Control Module (TCM). These trucks are designed for towing and if you use it that way, you can probably think of a few ways you would like your transmission to act differently. That is where TCM Tuning may be able to help.
But TCM is located in front of drivers side battery mounted to radiator support. Little box with metal spikes sticking out the back of it.
To answer your question, NO, there is no way to reset the computer. GM dealer can reflash the program and it will change some items, but most will be there.
The GM Genuine Original Equipment Automatic Transmission Control Module processes vehicle information and triggers responses designed to provide optimal shift points.
It's under the hood right above the steering box (covered with black plastic cover).
The crankshaft usually breaks near the number one rod journal due to a combination of excessive rpm and the large external counterweight. A factory firing order that beats up the front area of the crankshaft has also been blamed for imposing undue stress on the crank.
