The first motorway suspension bridge was inaugurated on 8 September 1966, and the newer cable-stayed bridge, a few miles to the south, was inaugurated on 5 June 1996. The Second Severn Crossing marks the upper limit of the Severn Estuary and was officially renamed the Prince of Wales Bridge on 2 July 2018.

And the two Severn bridges have frankly never been their responsibility. Much of the Second Severn Crossing and all of the old Severn Bridge reside in England. Under the rules of how devolution works, Wales' devolved government does have responsibility for maintaining trunk roads and the M4.
Building the bridgeThis second crossing was built to relieve traffic congestion on the original Severn Bridge, linking Wales to England across the Severn Estuary. Opened in 1996, this 5.2 km long crossing took 4 years to build and used 320,000 m3 of concrete - enough to fill 130 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
If you don't fancy driving across the Severn Crossing at all, then there is some good news — it is possible to walk and cycle across the river on the M48 Severn Bridge. However, neither pedestrians or cyclists are allowed to use the M4 Prince of Wales bridge.

The closure is necessary to allow contractors American Bridge International to position a crane on the carriageway so that footway joints can be removed for remedial works. Motorway traffic will be diverted via the M90 Queensferry Crossing.

The 5,128m (16,824ft) long structure took four years to build, cost £330m and was officially opened by Prince Charles on 5 June 1996. Work began on the M4 crossing in 1992 after the original Severn Bridge, built three decades earlier, struggled to cope with the volume of traffic.
