Matthew 3:17 is the seventeenth (and final) verse of the third chapter of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament. Jesus has just been baptized by John the Baptist and in this verse God announces that Jesus is his son.
John the Baptist was a 1st-century mission preacher on the banks of the River Jordan. He baptized Jews for repentance in the River Jordan. At the start of his ministry, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist.
After the baptism, the Synoptic gospels describe the temptation of Jesus, where Jesus withdrew to the Judean desert to fast for forty days and nights.
The Baptist Standard Confession of 1660 declares baptisms in the name of "Jesus Christ" to be valid.
19 Other books were more explicit in discussing Hong's identity as a son of God. Focusing on the birth order of God's sons, the Taiping Songs on World Salvation explained that 'the Heavenly Elder Brother is our Heavenly Father's first-born son [Crown Prince], and the Heavenly King is our Heavenly Father's second son.
Matthew 3:16 (Mark 1:10; Luke 3:22; John 1:32) And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him. In Hebrew, Jonah (??????) means dove.
The Hebrew Bible states that God revealed himself to mankind. God speaks with Adam and Eve in Eden (Gen 3:9–19); with Cain (Gen 4:9–15); with Noah (Gen 6:13, Gen 7:1, Gen 8:15) and his sons (Gen 9:1-8); and with Abraham and his wife Sarah (Gen 18).
Paul and John likewise maintained and developed the correlative of all this, Jesus' stress on the fatherhood of God. Over 100 times John's Gospel names God as "Father".
GOD SPEAKS! Yes … God speaks directly to humans. Over 2,000 times in the Old Testament there are phrases such as, "And God spoke to Moses" or "the word of the Lord came to Jonah" or "God said." We see an example of this in Jeremiah 1:9.
But before Peter can finish, a bright cloud appears, and a voice from the cloud states: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him" (Mark 9:7).
In the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (1961, 1984, 2013) published by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, Jehovah appears 7,199 times in the 1961 edition, 7,210 times in the 1984 revision and 7,216 times in the 2013 revision, comprising 6,979 instances in the Old Testament, and 237 in the New
John the ApostlePolycrates believed that John was the one "who reclined upon the bosom of the Lord"; suggesting an identification with the Beloved Disciple: John, who was both a witness and a teacher, "who reclined upon the bosom of the Lord", and, being a priest, wore the sacerdotal plate.
Possibility #1: Jesus was baptized in order to identify with those he came to save. And Jesus knewthat he too must identify himself with this movement towards God” John's baptism was part of the people's turning from sin and turning toward God. Jesus wanted to identify with this turning.
In the Hebrew Bible, Jedidiah (Jeddedi in Brenton's Septuagint Translation) was the second or "blessing" name given by God through the prophet Nathan in infancy to Solomon, second son of King David and Bathsheba.
Originally a post-punk/new wave band formed in 1983, they underwent a change of direction in the late 1980s to a house/alternative dance sound and experienced chart success in the UK and elsewhere.
