As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. Jesus gave Peter “the keys of the kingdom of heaven,†not the keys to heaven. A key was a badge of authority (Luke 11:52 ) and then as now was used to open doors. Our hope at St. Peter's College is that we give the keys for our students to open the doors of faith.
In Christian tradition, St. Peter was one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus. Roman Catholic tradition holds that Jesus established St. Peter as the first pope (Matthew 16:18).
Chosen when he was a simple fisherman to be an early disciple, or follower, Peter infamously denied Jesus three times. However, Jesus ultimately chose Peter to lead the church, calling him the rock of the church. Peter died after intense persecution as the first Pope and leader of the Catholic church.

Houses in ancient Nazareth were made with a rough stone foundation and mud-bricks made on site. A minimum of wood was used in the roof structure: wood was expensive. Located in the beautiful Lower Galilee region of Israel, and famed for being the city where Jesus had lived and grown up, today Nazareth is the largest Arab city in Israel, and one of the largest cities in northern Israel.

Peter in Capernaum is a modern Catholic pilgrimage church found in the archaeological site of Capernaum, northern Israel. It is considered "the first church in the world" and believed it could be the place where the house of the Apostle Peter was. In the 5th century an octagonal church was built in its place.
Paul's death are unknown, but tradition holds that he was beheaded in Rome and thus died as a martyr for his faith. His death was perhaps part of the executions of Christians ordered by the Roman emperor Nero following the great fire in the city in 64 CE.

In the original Greek the word translated as "Peter" is Î ÎÏ„Ïος (Petros) and that translated as "rock" is Ï€ÎÏ„Ïα (petra), two words that, while not identical, give an impression of one of many times when Jesus used a play on words.
Peter is a common masculine given name. It is derived from Greek Î ÎÏ„Ïος, Petros (meaning "stone, rock", via Greek petra), which itself was a translation of Syriac kefa, the nickname Jesus gave to apostle Simon Bar-Jona. An Old English variant is Piers.
Following the arrest of Jesus, Peter denied knowing him three times, but after the third denial, he heard the rooster crow and recalled the prediction as Jesus turned to look at him. Peter then began to cry bitterly. This final incident is known as the Repentance of Peter.

While a disciple is a student, one who learns from a teacher, an apostle is sent to deliver those teachings to others. "Apostle" means messenger, he who is sent. An apostle is sent to deliver or spread those teachings to others. We can say that all apostles were disciples but all disciples are not apostles.
