Among his six children was Robert Edward Lee, later the famed Confederate general during the American Civil War. Henry Lee III's brothers were the noted Richard Bland Lee, a three-term U.S. Congressman from Virginia, and Charles Lee (1758–1815), Attorney General of the United States from 1795–1801.

The Lee-Laurens duel was a duel between Colonel John Laurens and General Charles Lee on December 24, 1778. Lee was challenged by Laurens on event that he failed his command given to him by General George Washington.
In 1778, John Laurens challenged Lee to a duel and shot him in the side, wounding but not killing the officer. In 1780, Lee formally resigned from the Continental Army and retired to Philadelphia. It was there that Lee died in 1782.

Laurens then insisted that he would hold Lee accountable for his derogatory remarks about Washington and issued a challenge for a duel. Lee accepted the challenge, and the two men, with their seconds, met on the edge of a wood near Philadelphia on the afternoon of December 23, 1778.
Since Lee and Laurens were both still in Philadelphia, the duel took place on the next day just outside of the city. Both men selected their second, Lee picked friend Evan Edwards and Laurens brought Hamilton. Both Edwards and Hamilton claimed the offense was satisfied and the duel was over.
