When can you apply for student accommodation? It varies from uni to uni, but usually you can apply once you've accepted an offer. Some universities will allow you to apply for accommodation even if they're your insurance option, although many will only open applications to you if they're your firm choice.
The average contract length for insititution-owned halls is 41 weeks, while those for privately provided and nomination accommodation, which may house students from multiple institutions with differing term times, average 44 weeks and 45 weeks respectively.
This is certainly the case for most university halls and many other private student hall providers. At Unilife this is not a problem, we are one of very few providers that allow non-students to live with a student partner. As long as one of the couple is a student, there's no problem!
All eligible students will receive £1,000 a year for accommodation and living costs. Students may also be eligible for an additional means-tested maintenance grant. The total amount will be based on household income, with the highest level of support going to those most in need.

The minimum Maintenance Loan on offer for students from England is £3,410, which is paid to students with a household income of £58,222 or more and who'll be living at home during their time at uni.
Can I apply for accommodation at my insurance choice too? Although you can't apply for accommodation for either your first or insurance choice while you're still waiting for your offer, it is worth doing your research in advance so that you can make your application as soon as they open.

Most single-sex halls will be the ones where it's likely it is shared facilities e.g. toilet and shower. Single-sex accommodation tends to be in regular halls but specific flats inside of them are designated single sex. Mixed is maybe more common but I didn't have a choice in halls, I just got put into single sex.

All student housing is temporary. That's the reality of being a college student. This is just as true, if not more so, for non-students who live in student housing. Even if you are able to find student-housing, you won't be able to live in it indefinitely.

Your property is 'exempt' from council tax if it's only occupied by full-time university or college students. Student halls of residence are automatically exempt. This means the council tax is calculated as if you don't live there. This might mean that whoever does have to pay the council tax can get a discount.
Private student accommodation (or private halls) tend to vary, but typically encompass purpose-built buildings in which students can rent rooms within shared flats. This is different to student housing: you can also rent a room within a house from a landlord, usually through a letting agent.
