Wood, aluminium and polystyrene (styrofoam) are the most common picture frame materials. Solid wood is very popular, though metal and styrofoam frames provide cost, quality, lightweight options.
The type of board we use most often in picture framing, foam board is made by sandwiching a layer of styrofoam between two thin sheets of clay-coated paper, resulting in a light but rigid surface about 3/16" thick.
For flooring, the backer board should be installed over a 5/8-inch thick OSB or plywood base. For countertops, use 3/4-inch plywood beneath the backer board. And for walls and ceilings, apply 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch backer board screwed directly to the wall studs or joists.
This is true not only of your mounting board, but also of any material that comes in physical contact with your print (e.g. adhesive). This will ensure that your prints look their best for years to come. Three popular and common materials for photo mounting are: mat board, foam core, and gator board.
Depending on the thickness of the frame, foamcore board can be substituted for mat board. Foamcore typically has a colored top ply, an inner white foam ply, and a white back, but some foamcore is colored all the way through. These boards come in large sheets and can be adapted to large projects.
Strong 2.5mm thick Medium-density fibreboard which is generally used as backing board in framing. MDF is a low cost durable backing board that should be last item into the back of the picture frame. We recommend using an additional barrier board between your artwork and the MDF.
Foamcore, foam board, or 'paper-faced foam board''''''' is a lightweight and easily cut material used for mounting of photographic prints, as backing for picture framing, for making scale models, and in painting.
Matboard AcidityPaper mat that is made of wood-pulp is often called acid free as the acid is buffered out through a chemical process. These are the Conservation brand of matboards that are sold by most high-end frame shops.
Foam board mounting is the method of attaching a photographic image to a foam board for display. This can be achieved with glue, adhesive spray or double-sided adhesive sheets, however, many foam boards come with self-adhesive coatings.
Why Use Acid Free Mount Board? Frith & Company Acid Free Conservation mount board is made from wood based materials, is pH neutral and will not damage your artwork. Cement backer board is a mineral-based pre-fabricated wall unit, usually 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch thick and 3 feet by 5 feet long. It is made of cement, water, silica, limestone flour, and fibers such as Kevlar or fiberglass for increased strength.
Foamcore is one of the most popular mounting and frame backing board materials for photos and other items. The name “foamcore†refers to the inner portion of the mount board, which gives it its rigidity —and makes it perfect for mounting photos.
In the picture framing industry, a mount board is a thin, flat piece of coloured card included within a picture frame, which serves as additional decoration and to perform several other, more practical functions such as separating the art from the glass.
Backing boards are a supportive board that goes directly behind your art. It gives your artwork rigidity. For example, a poster might naturally want to sag or buckle, but a backing board will help sandwich the thin poster paper in place.
Backer board is a substrate material for tile. Unlike plywood and other wood substrates that can warp, backer board is hard and flat, so it won't buckle. Its stability allows you to adhere tile using a thinset mortar, making it relatively easy to create a tile surface that's level and consistent.
The most common work-around are off set clips, metal brackets with offsets of 1/8â€, ¼â€ or ½â€ that screw into the back of the frame and reach up to overlap the stack. In fact, ½â€ offset clips are deep enough to hold stretched canvas in most frames and are a quick, easy solution.
