High tides and low tides are caused by the moon. The moon's gravitational pull generates something called the tidal force. The tidal force causes Earth—and its water—to bulge out on the side closest to the moon and the side farthest from the moon. When you're not in one of the bulges, you experience a low tide.

1 : the rising and falling of the surface of the ocean caused twice daily by the attraction of the sun and the moon. 2 : something that rises and falls or rushes in a mass The tide of public opinion often changes. tide. verb. tided; tiding.
An incoming tide, or rising tide, is considered one of the best fishing tide times. Water that enters an estuary area from the ocean can have a lower temperature, contain more oxygen, and have better clarity than the water that exists in the estuary during low tide or slack water periods.
Hot Water Beach is best visited two hours either side of low-tide. If you arrive at high tide the hot springs will be under water.
Water seeping through fissures in the base rock leach down to the hot molten magma many thousands of metres below the earth's surface, only to be sent back to the surface as hot water exiting through the hot springs on the beach and in the Te Waiwaiwe Creek which runs alongside the beach.
Hot Water Beach Safety WarningIt is advised that swimmers only swim between the flags if the Hot Water Beach Surf Life Saving Crew Service are on patrol. The rocks in front of the hot springs are a hazardous location for strong currents, holes and rips making swimming in this location dangerous.

Cathedral Cove Walk Quick Details:The actual trail is 3.2 km or 2 miles from the trailhead. It's an additional one-mile hike to the actual trailhead from the parking lot. It's rated as an easy walk but it is steep.
