Shooting high-resolution or high-fps video when it's warm out can cause your camera to heat up and use more power. Lack of airflow and connecting to the GoPro app can cause your camera to warm up even more, use more power, and shorten recording time. Your camera will tell you if it needs to shut down and cool off.
Below are six ways to help your GoPro last longer between charges.
- Keep it off when not recording. Topping the list, this one's obvious.
- Update the firmware.
- Turn off Wi-Fi.
- Reduce the recording resolution or frame rate.
- Turn off the LCD screen.
- Bring along an extended battery pack or extra batteries.
Don't put a camera in an oven. You would keep the oven door open, keep your camera at a safe distance from the heat and get a time lapse of things browning up on the outside.
Use hand warmers in the pocket where you keep both the camera and spare batteries. (keep these in a small bag or a sock to have them close together.) A small electric hand warmer can be used to keep batteries warm.
If a camera is freezing up, it is usually an indicator the camera's software needs to be updated or there is potentially an issue with the microSD being used. Try removing the SD card and see if the camera still freezes up. If it no longer freezes, then the issue is likely stemming from the SD card.
HERO7 Black/Silver/White, HERO (2018), HERO6 Black, HERO5 Black, HERO Session, HERO4 Session, HERO5 Session: YES. So long as all camera doors are closed, these cameras are waterproof down to 10m (33ft) without a housing.
Re: why is my camera getting hot while charging
If there is impedance due to low quality materials used in the cable, this could also cause an overheat (while possibly taking the same amount of time to charge or a longer amount of time to charge).Re: GoPro Hero 5 session - The camera gets very hot when charging. It stays super hot when it's charging, it's normal for the unit to run super hot. I was told at Best Buy that GoPro engineered it poorly so that the unit doesn't dissipate heat like it should.
Re: GoPro hero 7 black running hot
It's normal for the camera to get very warm. At higher resolution and/or frame rates it will get hot.Turn Wifi Off
Leaving the wifi on is the most common reason for battery drain even with the power off. Even if the camera is powered off, leaving the wifi on will gradually suck power as the system regularly polls for a signal.Press and hold the Mode button for about two seconds. After you hear three beeps and the red LED blinks three times, the GoPro will power off. Alternatively, you can use the voice command “GoPro Turn Off.” To set the GoPro to power off automatically, go to settings by tapping the wrench icon on the GoPro's screen.
If your camera is currently frozen, try to reset the camera by holding the MODE button for 10 seconds (hold the top SHUTTER button on the HERO Session / HERO4 Session).

If using a GoPro that has a protective/waterproof housing use anti-fog inserts. (tip when using a housing don't wait until you are up on the hill skiing to put the camera in a housing.
