Orchestral harps have been fairly standardized but lever harp designs range anywhere from two octaves to seven and a half, and average tensions from 17 lbs. to 40 lbs.
The mechanism on a Pedal harp is able to alter a string in three ways, which means that each string is able to sound as a sharp, natural or flat. Lever harps are only able to alter a string in two ways: depending on the tuning of the string, you will get a flat and a natural, or a natural and a sharp.
Harp strings are generally identified by their octave and pitch: Middle C is the 4th octave C.

To loosen the string turn the key the other way – thumb turning to point back at yourself. Always use very small movements to avoid snapping a string. Harps are not tuned in C major. Lever harps are tuned in Eb major and Pedal harps are tuned in Cb major.
