The Island is about a 50-60 mile drive from Manhattan depending on which ferry you need to take. The trip can take about 1.5 to 3 hours from Manhattan. Traffic can be heavy in summer, so allow more time to catch the ferry. The train to Fire Island takes about 1.5 hours and runs frequently.

subway stop directly below Jamaica Station is called "Sutphin Boulevard/Archer Avenue". train stops at Sutphin Boulevard (on Hillside Avenue), about 5 blocks north of Jamaica Station. AirTrainJFK connects with the LIRR at Jamaica Station for quick and easy service to JFK International Airport.
The station itself is not dangerous, neither are the immediate areas surrounding it. There are a lot of cops, and LIRR employees around. I wouldn't venture around in Jamaica too far. Not the greatest neighborhood, but Jamaica Ave is okay and safe for the most part.
Long Island Rail Road operates a train from Jamaica to New York Penn Station every 10 minutes. Tickets cost $5 - $8 and the journey takes 20 min.

Yes, there is a direct train departing from Hunterspoint Avenue and arriving at Montauk. Services depart five times a week, and operate Monday to Friday. The journey takes approximately 3h 14m. Manhattan to Montauk bus services, operated by Hampton Jitney Inc., depart from 40th & Lex station.
Mineola is a station on the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road in the village of Mineola, New York. All trains for the Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma, and Oyster Bay branches run through this station, as well as a few for the Montauk Branch.
Their Train lines cover an area from the North (Greenport, Ny) with a stop at Greenport to the South (Long Beach, Ny) with a stop at Long Beach. Their most western stop is NY Penn Station (Manhattan) and the most eastern stop is Montauk (Montauk, Ny).

You can purchase a permit onboard LIRR trains, by mail or at LIRR ticket booths. Note that bicycles are allowed on LIRR trains at most times other than rush hours and major holidays. On weekdays, a maximum of four bicycles per train is allowed, but on weekends, a maximum of eight bicycles per train is allowed.
