Brush your dog's teeth when they are calm and relaxed. Your goal: Set a routine. Working up to brushing daily is ideal. But if their mouth is healthy, even three days a week can make a difference.

Brush down and out, away from the dog's skin. Always brush in the direction the coat grows; dogs don't like to be brushed backwards. Be gentle or you may damage your dog's coat by pulling and stretching hairs until they tangle and break.

- Start from the back of the dog and go forward, pushing the hair forward and very gently using the grooming rake or pin brush to brush it back into place.

- Daily. Your short haired dog should be brushed every day.
