The bichon is a bundle of energy and needs a lot of attention and activity to keep it happy. The dogs can suffer from separation anxiety if they are left alone, which means they do best in a home where someone is around most of the time. They are exceptionally smart and easy to train, with one exception.
A Bichon Frise has black or dark brown eyes which are rounded in shape. They have very dark brown or black rims around their eyes called halos, which enhance the dog's expression. Find the ears. Bichon Frises have drop ears which are covered with long flowing hair.
Since the Bichon Frise knows that they are small dogs, they are often threatened and overreact to make up for their tiny physique. They display their aggressive temperament by growling, barking or by simply biting their subjects.
While you may come across a few Bichon Frise owners and breeders who claim that they have a brown or black color variant, this is almost always due to mixed genes from another dog breed.
This breed truly stands out with curly, bright white fur and a playful personality. Though they're fun and lovable pets, Bichon Frises require lots of grooming and maintenance—so know what you're in for! Bichon Frise literally means “curly toy dogâ€, and their hair consists of a thick undercoat and a curly topcoat.
noun. a small and tame dog.
Bichons can be anywhere from 12–18 pounds and stand between 9.5–11.5 inches tall. Their coat is always white, their eyes and noses black. Bichon frises don't look this cute on their own!
Grooming a Bichon is not for cowards: this is a high-maintenance breed. You'll need to allot considerable time for grooming and bathing: you should brush him at least twice a week or more, and you'll need to bathe him whenever he gets dirty in order to keep that white coat clean.
Behavioral reasons for why a dog licks are far more common than medical reasons. Dogs may lick because they like the salty taste of their owner's skin, as a sign of affection, or out of habit and boredom. Licking can also be calming or soothing, much like when people receive a relaxing massage.
With the right amount of grooming, many owners say their Bichon Frise actually smells good. Put in the effort to clip and brush Ginger all of the time, and you should see some sweet smelling results. A recent survey supports that some owners feel their Bichon Frise doesn't smell at all, or, not that much.

The Poochon is a mixed breed dog–a cross between the Toy Poodle and Bichon Frise dog breeds. Small, happy, and intelligent, these pups inherited some of the best qualities from both of their parents. Poochons are also called Bichpoo, Bichon Poo, and Bichon Poodle .
Bichon Frises are quick learners in most aspects, but can be notoriously difficult to potty train. Many owners are wary of crate training as they don't want to confine their pets. However, dogs are den animals and do not mind being occasionally confined to a crate.
For night sleeping, place the crate in the room where you sleep, preferably next to your bed. It is in a dog's natural instincts to sleep with her pack. For a bichon frise, a small dog crate that is 24 inches in depth should be big enough.
Perfect size. These pups are the quintessential lap dogs, and enjoy cuddling and sleeping close by. They are big enough to withstand more aggressive cuddling and kisses, but small enough to pick them up when needed.
Bichons don't drool and don't shed much, which is another advantage to owning this breed. Bichons can live in either an apartment or in a country home as long as they get to spend plenty of time with the owners. Bichon cons include the housetraining difficulties - this is not an easy breed to housetrain.
Adult Bichon Frises (1-year-old+) can be comfortable on their own for 6-8 hours. If your Bichon Frise suffers from anxiety disorders, particularly Bichon Frise separation anxiety, he shouldn't be on his own for longer than 5 hours prior to you giving him extensive training so he can cope for 6-8 hours.
The Shichon is a mixed breed dog–a cross between the Shih Tzu and the Bichon Frise dog breeds. Affectionate, intelligent, and outgoing, these pups inherited some of the best qualities from both of their parents. Shichons go by a few other names including the Shih Tzu-Bichon mix, Zuchon, and Teddy Bear dog.
The Bichon is considered to be relatively hypoallergenic, as the breed sheds very little because the shed hair is caught up in the undercoat. That shed hair has to be brushed out to prevent mats from forming. As with all breeds, the Bichon's nails should be trimmed regularly as well.
Your Bichon Frise may also be acting all needy because they are suffering from separation anxiety. It is a highly sensitive dog breed that is easily traumatized by things like early separation from their litter. Bichons are also very needy when it comes to physical contact.
The Bichon tends to get on with other dogs and children. Alert and immensely loyal to their favorite human, Bichons make nice little watchdogs—but they are lovers not fighters, and operate under the assumption that there are no strangers, just friends they haven't met yet.
While the Bichon Frise isn't a guard dog, they will offer an alert bark if someone approaches the home.
The best choice usually is a dog of the opposite sex. If you have a female dog at home, better get a male Bichon Frise. If you have a male, get a female Bichon Frise. The reason behind this is that dogs of the same gender have higher chances of having disagreements or fights over those of the opposite sex.
The Bichon Frise is pretty easy to live with. This cheerful, pleasant house dog enjoys playing games, snuggling into laps and pillows, and perching on the back of the sofa so he can peer out the window (and often BARK. but we'll get to that!).
The Bichon dog breed, with a lifespan of about 12 to 15 years, is prone to some serious health problems like hyperadrenocorticism, allergies, and patellar luxation, or from less serious conditions like cataract and canine hip dysplasia (CHD); Legg-Perthes and liver disease may also affect the breed.
Shih Tzu's are known for being super cute lap dogs, but they are also actually quite intelligent. The breed is also known for being temperamental and stubborn, so getting one to perform tricks is pretty impressive.
