ACV has antifungal properties which may allow it to fight off a dandruff-causing fungus called Malassezia. Eczema and Malassezia are often coexisting. Make a hair oil by mixing ACV with sunflower oil.
In general, malassezia infections are treated with topical or oral antifungal agents, such as ketoconazole shampoo and oral fluconazole. Seborrhoeic dermatitis may also be treated with topical steroids.
Naturally occurring skin yeast (ie Malassezia) are also thought to play a part. Petrolatum is considered a skin protectant and has a strong ability to hold moisture in skin.
| Condition or disease | Intervention/treatment | Phase |

| Seborrheic Dermatitis | Biological: Petroleum Jelly | Not Applicable |
The results of the present study showed that Aloe vera had satisfactory antimicrobial activity against clotrimazole-resistant Malassezia furfur isolates in vitro and that its antimicrobial activity increased upon increasing its concentration.
The susceptibility of 64 Malassezia Jurfur isolates to Melaleuca alternifolia oil was determined. The minimum inhibitory concentration for 90% of isolates was 0.25% by agar dilution and 0-12% by broth dilution. These data indicate that tea tree oil may be useful in the treatment of skin conditions involving M. furfur.
Candida species are the most common cause of fungal infection in immunocompromised persons. Malassezia yeast, although normal flora in most healthy individuals, cause a wide spectrum of superficial cutaneous disease, including tinea versicolor and Malassezia folliculitis.
The oil may therefore help combat Malassezia. Research published in 2008 found that coconut oil in adults was helpful for treating both eczema and fungus at the same time. Since Malassezia is a fungus, using the oil can help decrease the amount of these organisms on your scalp and any related dandruff issues.
But the oils may feed Malassezia, which feeds on sebum, the oily stuff produced by pores and hair follicles. And in fact, researchers who want to grow Malassezia yeast often grow it in olive oil. Sebum and vegetable oils are made up of both saturated and unsaturated fatty acids.
Yeast infection treatment
- antifungal cream, often with clotrimazole as the active ingredient.
- antifungal lotion, often with tolnaftate as the active ingredient.
- oral antifungals, often with fluconazole as the active ingredient.
- corticosteroid cream, such as hydrocortisone.
Therefore, implementing a maintenance regimen consisting of topical (or rarely, oral) antifungals is important for preventing relapses. Since topical antifungals and washes do not penetrate well into the hair follicle, first-line treatment is generally with oral antifungals. Improvement is expected within 1–2 months.
Home RemediesHoney has antimicrobial qualities. So apply it on the affected area and keep it on for as long as you can, even for a few hours if possible. Tea tree oil is another antimicrobial that can be used. Dilute it with water and apply only on the acne as it can irritate the skin if applied all over.
Fungal infections are typically treated with antifungal drugs, usually with antifungal drugs that are applied directly to the affected area (called topical drugs). Topical drugs may include creams, gels, lotions, solutions, or shampoos. Antifungal drugs may also be taken by mouth.
Malassezia folliculitis presents as small, uniform, itchy papules and pustules particularly on the upper back and chest. Other sites involved can include the forehead/hair line, chin, neck, and extensor aspect of the upper limbs.
Malassezia are dimorphic fungi, at times assuming yeast forms and at times hyphal forms, depending on culture conditions. In their yeast form, they may be spherical, oval, or elongated, and they reproduce by unipolar budding.
To treat a yeast infection on the face, people can use antifungal medications. Topical antifungal products are available in the form of creams, gels, ointments, or sprays that people apply directly to the affected area, such as the face.
Adding a cup of apple cider vinegar to a warm bath may help fight the bacteria that cause folliculitis and keep the skin on the buttocks clear.
Malassezia is a type of naturally-occurring yeast that can cause inflammation and further damage to hair follicles if produced in excess and left untreated. Just like increased sebum production, increased Malassezia production can cause hair loss.
Don't cut, poke, or squeeze the sores. This can be painful and spread infection. Don't scratch the affected area.
Firstly; The exact cause of dandruff is unknown, there may be different reasons but some scientists believed that it may be caused by a fungal-like-yeast called "malassezia". Secondly; The dandruff is only contagious in case of ringworm infection, that is; when the glands become inflamed and secrete flaky scales.
The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil have antimicrobial properties that can help protect against harmful microorganisms. This is especially important for skin health, as many types of skin infections, including acne, cellulitis, folliculitis and athlete's foot, are caused by bacteria or fungi ( 6 ).
Diagnosis. Doctors tend to diagnose folliculitis based on a physical examination. The doctor may examine the skin, take note of symptoms, and review the person's medical and family history. They may take a swab of the infected skin to test for which bacteria or fungus has caused the folliculitis.
What, you may be wondering, do we feed these fungi? Skin oils. With only one exception, Malassezia species require a source of lipids, such as the oil you produce in your skin's sebaceous glands, to grow.
Head & Shoulders helps with seborrheic dermatitis, acne vulgaris and an acne-like inflammation of hair follicles called pityrosporum folliculitis because of its active ingredient, pyrithione zinc, and its anti-fungal properties.
Ketoconazole cream is usually applied once a day for 2 to 6 weeks. Prescription ketoconazole shampoo is usually applied one time to treat the infection.
Why do people use tea tree oil? Tea tree oil has been used traditionally as a topical antiseptic and antifungal treatment. One study found that a dilution of tea tree oil worked as well as 5% benzoyl peroxide in controlling the symptoms of acne. It may be effective with toenail fungus and possibly athlete's foot.
Yes and no. While a face mask can't be the sole cause of a skin infection, the combination of summer heat, humidity and tight-fitting mask fabric could exacerbate underlying conditions that could worsen a fungal or bacterial infection.
Benzoyl Peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is a powerful antimicrobial agent destroying both surface and ductal bacterial organisms and yeasts.
This includes the bottom of your cheeks and around your jawline. For some people, hormonal acne takes the form of blackheads, whiteheads, and small pimples that come to a head, or cysts. Cysts form deep under the skin and don't come to a head on the surface. These bumps are often tender to the touch.
Selsun Blue Dandruff Shampoo, £24.95This shampoo has been recommended by various dermatologists as a fungal acne treatment because of its anti-fungal ingredients – pyrithione zinc and selenium sulphide.
Head & Shoulders Classic Clean Daily Shampoo"I typically recommend using an anti-dandruff shampoo in the shower daily when the bumps are active and weekly once it's gone to keep it gone," she adds. "It works better if you apply it to the affected area and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing it off.
Topical treatments, such as retinoids, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, as well as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, may also be used to treat hormonal acne, Jaber said, but he noted that many women will find more success with hormonal treatments.
Selsun Blue (selenium sulfide) is a nonprescription medicated shampoo that helps this condition. Apply this shampoo once a day for 14 days. Apply it to the affected skin areas as well as 2 or 3 inches around the spots. Rub it in and let it dry.
