The red kangaroo (Osphranter rufus) is the largest of all kangaroos, the largest terrestrial mammal native to Australia, and the largest extant marsupial.

The bald eagle became a national emblem in 1785, after a drawing of the eagle was presented to the newly-formed Congress, according the U.S. National Archives.
The Cooktown orchid became known as Queensland's floral emblem in 1959, during celebrations to mark the state's centenary. Before this, the distinctive native flower had long been popularly considered as Queensland's unofficial floral emblem.

The kangaroo and emu are bearers on the Australian Coat of Arms. It has been claimed these animals were chosen to signify a country moving 'forward' because of a common belief that neither can move backward. Australia's national airline, Qantas, uses a bounding kangaroo for its logo.
Kangaroo meat was legalised for human consumption in South Australia in 1980. In New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria it could only be sold as pet food until 1993. Many Australian restaurants serve kangaroo meat. Kangaroo meat has been exported since 1959.

People petitioned to separate, and in 1859 Queen Victoria granted them their own colony. As the name perfectly suggests, they named it Queensland to honour Queen Victoria.
On 26 May 1982 it was announced that the floral emblem for the ACT would be the Royal Bluebell (Wahlenbergia gloriosa). The Royal Bluebell is restricted in distribution to the high mountain areas of the ACT, south eastern NSW and eastern Victoria.

The State of Queensland flag is the British Blue Ensign, consisting of a dark blue field with the Union flag occupying the upper hoist, differenced in the fly by the state badge. The badge comprises an azure Maltese Cross with a Royal Crown superimposed, all on a white (in lieu of silver) background.
