A cooktop is built into a counter and is usually paired with a separate wall oven. A cooktop requires a cutout in the countertop where the cooktop can be “dropped” into the hole. A range requires a break in the length of a countertop, so you'll have two separate pieces of countertop on each side.
“A lot of home cooks don't use a 48- or 36-inch range when they can get by with a 30-inch range just fine. That high end has shriveled up quite a bit.”
Get the height of your range by measuring from the floor/feet to the top of the cooking surface. And when we say cook surface, we don't mean the top of the control panel. Only measure up to where the stove top location. To get the width merely measure from the left edge of the range to the right.

If you prefer the topper sit inside the ridge (outer ledge of stove), please measure True-to-Size. If you prefer the topper sit flush next to countertop, please add 1/2 inch to each side of width.
