Households who use heating oil and buy in the summer months can save an average of £300 on their annual bills, a study suggests. This is because the price is typically lower in the summer months, and in August it was the cheapest price recorded since December 2016.
500 litres, even in winter, will last us 2-3 months.
Lee Cowles, managing director of BoilerJuice, said: 'Most people buy heating oil when they need it, typically as the weather gets colder and homes need more heating, but the best time to buy is usually during the summer.
Oil prices bounced higher on Tuesday, but news Wednesday was mostly bearish, sending prices lower again. In a separate monthly report, the government agency lowered its 2020 expectations for U.S. crude-oil production by 1.6% from its previous forecast to 12.99 million barrels a day.
Buyers can currently expect to pay around 52 pence per litre. The average size of a domestic heating oil tank is between 1,000 and 3,000 litres, so the cost of filling a tank will be around £1,000. Depending on usage, you may need to refill the tank a few times a year.
Oil prices will average $23/b in the second quarter of 2020, but increase to $30/b in the second half of the year. The average will be $33/b barrel for 2020, down from $64/b in 2019. Prices will rise to $46/b in 2021.
Heating oil is the name used for heating applications in central heating systems. Gas oil (also known as red diesel and 35-second oil) is generally for commercial and agricultural use. Kerosene (also known as home heating oil or 28-second oil) is a lighter oil that is used in many homes.
Most plastic bunded oil tanks come with a 10 year manufacturers' warranty and when properly installed and maintained can last for many years beyond its expiration date.
1000 litres of heating oil may last one home a year, and it may last one family three months. It may feel like you have a lack of control over your heating oil usage, however, knowing your usage and costs will put you in a much stronger position and help put you in control.
During 2017 and 2018, heating oil prices rose steadily and during 2019 stabalised, at between $55-65 per barrel. Domestic oil prices vary throughout the UK, but are typically around 48-55 pence per litre in Q1 2020 depending upon location / quantity required.

Gas Oil: Gas oil is most commonly known as red diesel or 35-second oil. The latter name is in relation to the distillation process. It is cheaper than road diesel (derv) because it is a rebated fuel. Kerosene: is sometimes known as 28-second oil or home heating oil.
The average size of a residential oil tank is 275 gallons. On days when the outside temperature averages 50 degrees Fahrenheit, a typical household will consume 2 gallons of heating oil. When you divide a full 275-gallon tank by two, the heating oil will last for approximately 137 days, or four months and two weeks.

Production costs can cause oil prices to rise or fall as well. U.S. production also directly affects the price of oil. With so much oversupply in the industry, a decline in production decreases overall supply and increases prices. As of 2019, the U.S. has an average daily production level of 12 million barrels of oil.
When it comes to heating oil prices, oil fired central heating is generally a little more expensive than gas for heating, but is often the cheapest option in rural areas where there is no gas supply. Oil is used mainly in boilers, but sometimes fires and cookers use it as fuel.
