The Astra was trailing its rivals slightly before it benefited from an update in 2019 that brought some great engines and some useful trim revisions. It can't quite match the Volkswagen Golf or Ford Focus as a complete package but the Astra is a capable, comfortable and efficient all-rounder nonetheless.

After a short hiatus, Vauxhall has confirmed its VXR badge is coming back but with a twist. All future VXR models will be electric, so the Corsa VXR will be a zero-emission rival to the Ford Fiesta ST and Volkswagen Polo GTI.
Using the pretty three-door GTC as its base means the VXR is one of the best looking hot hatches around. Inside the VXR has heavily bolstered sports seats and a chunky leather wrapped steering wheel and the cabin uses the same high quality materials as the standard Astra hatchback.

Vauxhall's first 'hot' diesel will be an Insignia VXR, powered by a new 2.9-litre V6 diesel. Although no power figure has been revealed, Vauxhall has said that the diesel will be offered alongside a 360bhp petrol-powered Insignia VXR.
