Google Beacon is a technology that enables proximity-based triggers and actions in both the digital and physical world. By utilizing existing Bluetooth low energy (BLE) hardware technology, beacons communicate with nearby smart devices.
Beacons are small, wireless transmitters that use low-energy Bluetooth technology to send signals to other smart devices nearby. Put simply, they connect and transmit information to smart devices making location-based searching and interaction easier and more accurate.

To register the beacon:
- Launch the app and select the Google Developer project you want to use.
- Position your device near the beacon. You should see a list of beacons.
- Select the beacon you want to register, then tap Register Beacon. The beacon should then appear under the Registered tab.

Beacon Installation
- Plot Beacons on the floor plan. Start with your retail establishment's floor plan and circle where you want to place beacons.
- Install the beacons. Once you have the plotted the beacons on the floor plan, install beacons on all those locations.
- Run the Trials. Your customers' smartphones will start noticing the beacons.
There is no on or off switch on your Google beacon. As you've already probably figured out, there's really no way to know if your Google Project Beacon is working or not. If you decide you no longer want to be part of Project Beacon, Google says you can return your beacon to Google.
The Beacon's Downfall
A major contributor to the collapse of beacon technology was difficult implementation on both the consumer and retailer side. Beacon is dependent on users having the app for a specific store installed on their phone — with Bluetooth and privacy settings properly configured — in order to work.Short answer…on IOS there is no chance, without a specific app installed to interact with Eddystone format beacons. Nearby, which relies on Google Play Service will still work, although the beacon must register with Google Beacon Dashboard to receive its instructions.
Crafting a Minecraft beacon is an incredibly lengthy process, but the rewards are certainly worth it. You'll be granted status effects such as speed, jump boost, haste, regeneration, resistance, and strength to yourself and nearby players.
Although the iPhone has built-in Bluetooth technology, wireless file transfer capabilities are limited by its operating system. To transfer files wirelessly between an iPhone and an Android device, both devices must be running the same third-party Bluetooth file transfer application.
An iOS device with hardware support for Bluetooth 4.0. All devices Apple released since the iPhone 4S (including the 4S) do, the older ones don't. A Bluetooth LE peripheral your app can talk to. This can be a second iOS device or Mac, but it's usually more fun to have some hardware gadget you want to communicate with.
Bluetooth beacons are hardware transmitters - a class of Bluetooth low energy (LE) devices that broadcast their identifier to nearby portable electronic devices. Bluetooth beacons use Bluetooth low energy proximity sensing to transmit a universally unique identifier picked up by a compatible app or operating system.
Project Beacon by Google
Google recently launched a new pilot program called Project Beacon. As a part of this program, Google is sending beacons (for free) to businesses with physical locations in an effort to make their venues more visible to customers with mobile devices while they're within your venue.Bluetooth Low Energy (
BLE), available in
Android 4.3 and later, creates short connections between devices to transfer bursts of data.
BLE scanning
- Go to Settings > Security & Location > Location.
- Check that the Location On/Off toggle is in the On position.
- Go to Mode.
- Select either High accuracy or Battery saving mode.

Open your phone's Settings app. Nearby. Under "Using Nearby," you'll find the apps that use Nearby. To turn off Nearby notifications from an app, tap the app.
Since iBeacon was developed by Apple you may think that it only works with Apple devices but this is not true - iBeacon works on Android devices as well.
Beacons aren't expensive. Gimbal Proximity Beacons cost between $5 and $30, for example. Prices differ due to beacon signal range, types of batteries used, typical battery life (which can be several years), and other factors.
A Bluetooth iBeacon/Eddystone beacon costs $23 on an average. However, the cost varies based on the form factor, signal range, typical battery life and other factors.

iBeacon is Apple's implementation of Bluetooth low-energy (BLE) wireless technology to create a different way of providing location-based information and services to iPhones and other iOS devices. It's worth noting the same BLE technology is also compatible with Android 4.3.
