“Opacity” is the term most commonly used to describe the ability of the paint to obliterate the colour difference of a substrate.
Opacity is applied to every pixel in the layer, so it acts like layer-wide transparency setting. To adjust a layer's Opacity setting, highlight the layer in the Layers Window (see above - the Active Layer) and press the F4 key. Opacity or Alpha values range from 0 (completely transparent) to 255 (completely opaque).
Pure Brilliant White is slightly whiter than standard white.. in the same way that there are 50 shades of grey..
Crown vinyl matt is a lot cheaper than Dulux. The opacity is great, and the finish is a rich flat matt. There are a couple of issues, it doesn't seem like there is much in the way of polymer binder in the paint, meaning it can scuff and mark easily. Plus, it drags when you're applying a second coat.

Adding that touch of black to a white oil kept it from yellowing quite so bad. Then there was a hide issue. A lot of white paints back in the day were also pastel bases, or tintable whites. Adding the touch of black helped them hide better.

Making Paint Different Strengths-ShadesEach colour has its own formula, this is a combination of different tints that go into the base colour. so half strength would be adding only half the amount of each tint required and double strength would be doubling up on the amount of each tint that is required.
Can I use white emulsion paint as a primer? Primers and undercoats are different. However, you can use emulsion paints as a primer as well for sealing unpainted surfaces. With that in mind, you can easily make your own primer at home by diluting emulsion paint with water in an 80:20 ratio.

It's really, really simple. Plain ole un-tinted bright white. No fancy color names, no added dye. Just un-tinted base bright white.
It's hard to beat Dulux when it comes to colours, as the website has literally hundreds of different shades on offer. Farrow & Ball largely takes influence from a more traditional colour palette. Product quality. Dulux receives a mixed bag of online reviews that are split around 50/50 between very good and poor.
dulux is much more expensive that british paints. do you have feedback for those brands? If its the premium of each brand. they should perform pretty similarly.. Dulux likes to use its brand recognition to take more of your money, but in reality.

Dulux paint is consistently decent but not necessarily better. A trade Rated paint from a lesser known brand will tend to be better quality than the Dulux home diy range. Most trade paints will have more pigment in, be thicker and will flow better.
Dulux is better quality,but if you're on a budget-Wickes is cheaper.
It does yellow so it isn't going to look fresh for years like the Dulux Trade oil-based gloss does, but the finish is bang on. Decorators love this product for bashing out rentals.
Thinning slightly does help obtain a good finish, and stretches your expensive paint to cover more wall. Just touching in with it can show up in my experience - hence redoing the whole wall. If the duvet stained the wall it sounds like the pigment leached into the wall whilst damp.
Leyland ok Dulux better. You can always buy discounted and 10% more added etc Dulux white matt in Brewers. Also try B&Q own brand paint (emulsion only) its just re-badged Dulux but half the price.
Tikkurila Anti-Reflex is officially the very best product to use for the job. Tikkurila Anti-Reflex is a durable paint which leaves a very flat matt finish, eliminating roller and brush marks. Opacity is it's weakness, but as long as you apply nice thick coats you will never have an issue.
Best Emulsion for walls and Ceilings
- Crown Trade Vinyl Matt Emulsion. Crown Trade vinyl matt gives you the true flat matt finish you would hope to achieve from this type of emulsion.
- Dulux Trade Vinyl matt.
- Armstead Vinyl Matt.
- Johnstone's Covaplus.
Valspar isn't B&Q's own brand they just mix the pigments into it instore. I used it in our bedroom as we couldn't find a ready mixed alternative. It's pretty good paint imo & would say it's as good as Dulux standard emulsion. I used the Dulux endurance in our hallway & found it excellent.
Matt paint is defined by experts as dull. It doesn't shine at all and dries to a smooth, velvety finish that hides surface imperfections. You can opt for washable matt paint, but it will still need more maintenance than silk. Silk paint dries to a smooth low-sheen finish that provides a graceful glow.
1. Matt. Matt emulsion is commonly used on walls and ceilings and often where the surface is uneven. It is a flat finish with a sheen level of less than 10%, therefore non-reflective in appearance.
Even if you have a high-quality emulsion paint sprayer, you may still need to thin down the paint. When you thinned down emulsion paint before spraying though, you need to remember it will need around 3 to 4 coats to completely cover and produce the finish you are looking to achieve.
Johnstone's Covaplus in my opinion is the best trade emulsion on the market. It dries flat and you have very few issues will roller and brush marks. Dulux vinyl matt is one of the worst! It is expensive, has a high sheen level and roller or brush marks can be a big problem.
Wilko emulsion is fine - I've used it on the walls in my kitchen. I wouldn't use their Satin wood though - Dulux trade oil-based Satinwood is very good (imo).
Matt emulsion is perfect for coating ceilings; there is no need for the surface to be washable and it hides the imperfections that tend to be very visible on ceilings. In rooms that are subjected to high levels of condensation, i would advise against using Matt emulsion and instead opt for a Satin or Silk finish.
