Instructions
- Make a crystal growing solution. You can use any recipe.
- Pour a little solution onto a cookie sheet or glass pan. It's okay if the liquid is still hot.
- Tilt the pan around to spread out the solution. You'll see a fan of crystals form as the liquid evaporates, similar to frost on a windowpane.
Crystal Weight.
For example a small topaz crystal might cost $3 per gram. A larger one might be $5 per gram. If the first one weighed 10 grams it would cost $30. If the second, bigger one weighed 20 grams it would be $100.The key to either method of growing crystals is to make a supersaturated solution of water and salt or sugar. In this experiment, water is called the solvent, and the salt or sugar is called the solute. You can use regular old sugar, and either rock salt or Epsom salt.
Prepare an ice bath by filling the large bowl half full of ice cubes and then adding water until the bowl is three-quarters full. Place the ice bath on a counter top or on a table, where it can be left undisturbed for at least 5 hours while the crystals grow.
