The hand auger consists of extendable steel rods, rotated by a handle. A number of different steel augers (drill bits) can be attached at the bottom end of the drill rods. The augers are rotated into the ground until they are filled, and then lifted out of the borehole to be emptied.
You'll be fine with a hand auger. Even if I had a gas powered auger I would bring the hand auger instead because of how convenient they are to through in the sled. I started fishing with 12-14 inches of ice and could hand drill a dozen holes easily. Less than 30 turns per hole.
Before you lose your wits and pour in a (usually ineffective) liquid drain cleaner, turn to the best drain-cleaning tool of all: the sink auger. It's inexpensive, easy to use, and requires no chemicals. It's just the thing for clearing clogs in sinks and bathtub drains. Use a toilet auger instead.
You manually insert the auger end of the snake into the drain and then begin uncoiling by rotating the handle. As the snake uncoils, the auger moves further through the drain pipe, until it breaks through the obstruction.
How to use a manual post-hole auger

- Step 3 – Twist handle.
- Step 4 – Remove soil from ground.
- Step 5 – Remove soil from manual post-hole auger.
- Step 6 – Repeat.

Shelby tube samples are typically collected by advancing a 3.0-inch O.D. seamless steel tube (constructed from either 16-gauge or 18-gauge steel) past the bottom of the advancing drill stem by applying constant downward pressure directly to the drill rod stem using the vertical hydraulic feed system of the drill rig.

Practical Approach to Sampling
- Obtain equal volumes of grab samples to be composited or 3–6 volumes of a sample to be homogenized.
- Place the soil into a mixing tray, divide the soil into four quarters, and thoroughly mix each quarter separately with a spoon.
- Mix the four quarters together in the center of the tray.
You can use drill rigs to collect disturbed samples from great depths. Collection tools such as split-spoon samplers, Shelby tubes and macrocore push samplers are used in conjunction with the drill rig or a direct-push rig to collect the sample after the rig reaches the desired depth.
Soil Sampling Methods
Soil sampling should reflect tillage, past fertilizer/soil amendment placement, cropping patterns (and corresponding irrigation requirements), soil type (including drainage and slope characteristics) and perhaps old field boundaries (such as old feedlots, windrows, altered stream beds, etc.).0.2 With a view to establishing uniform procedure for the determination of different characteristics of soils, Indian Standards on methods of test for soils ( IS : 2720 ) have been formulated in various parts. samples from the bulk soil sample received from the field for various laboratory tests.
Upon returning from the field, store samples in refrigerator or cold room as soon as possible, cool overnight, and ship for analysis as soon as possible (see further details below). Do not freeze the samples. Do not dry the samples.
When collecting samples, avoid small areas where the soil conditions are obviously different from those in the rest of the field—for example, wet spots, old manure and urine spots, places where wood piles have been burned, severely eroded areas, old building sites, fencerows, spoil banks, and burn-row areas.
