Phil Mitchell is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, played by Steve McFadden. McFadden took a hiatus from the series at the end of Phil's liver cirrhosis storyline with the character departing on 6 February 2017.
On Steve and Mel's wedding night, Phil is shot and collapses in a pool of blood. Steve is the prime suspect and is arrested, but Phil - knowing Steve is innocent - confronts the real culprit, Lisa, after he is discharged from hospital.
Viewers have watched all week in anticipation of finding out which long-running character would die in the boat crash on the River Thames – with Friday's (February 21) instalment revealing it would be Sharon's young son Dennis Rickman.
McFadden then rose to fame for portraying the role of Phil Mitchell in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. He joined EastEnders at the beginning of 1990, at the same time as Ross Kemp, who played Phil's younger brother Grant Mitchell. He left EastEnders in late 2003 for a one-year break to concentrate on pantomimes.
