It killed Billy at the end, the only reason it didn't kill him right away is because it didn't expect him to be free from his possession,” a dissenter retorted. “It could be because it was surprised that after everything, Billy would still defy it,” they elaborated.
Dacre Montgomery, who plays Billy, won't be returning as his character died sacrificing himself to save Hawkins. And we also saw the tragic death of Hawkins' chief of police Hopper, although the new trailer (watch above) revealed that the scruffy cop is in fact alive and (not so) well.
Joyce and Eleven are leaving Hawkins for a number of reasons, including the trauma of what happened there, but it's entirely possible that the connection between the Upside Down and El could follow them wherever they go.
Dacre Montgomery (born November 22, 1994) plays Billy on 'Stranger Things'. Dacre is 24 years old. In season 3 of 'Stranger Things', the character Billy is 18 years old.
The Hollywood Report broke the news on July 2nd, 2020 that the series rescheduled to restart filming on September 17th, 2020. But that was then later delayed to September 28th, 2020.

How many series is stranger things?
The third season finale of Netflix's "Stranger Things" left the ensemble of characters believing the beloved chief of police Jim Hopper had died during the effort to re-close the Gate to the Upside Down. Now, Netflix has officially confirmed Hopper is alive and well, but being held prisoner in Russia.
According to the events of Stranger Things season three, episode eight, The Battle of Starcourt Mall, Eleven lost her powers after she pulled part of the Mind Flayer out of her body.
Stranger Things was pitched as a limited series, and it was planned that Eleven would sacrifice herself in the last episode of the series. But, Netflix were keen for the show to be continued in a second season, so the brothers decided to keep this character alive.
Here's a list of everyone who died on Stranger Things 3.
- Bruce Lowe. Netflix.
- Tom Holloway. Netflix.
- Heather Holloway. Netflix.
- Doris Driscoll. Netflix.
- Alexei. Netflix.
- Grigori. Netflix.
- Billy Hargrove. Netflix.
- The Mind Flayer. Netflix.
Sink plays Max in the Netflix series, which returned for its third season on 4 July. This instalment ended with the shocking death of Billy Hargrove, played by Dacre Montgomery. Max is Billy's younger stepsister in the show, meaning that his death – as Sink told Teen Vogue – understandably leaves her traumatised.
Though not a major storyline in Season 2, Billy and Karen Wheeler have a bit of history (and chemistry) together. "The Duffers and I love that scene, and so I'm just going to say that the Billy and Mrs. Wheeler dynamic is not yet done.” Well, we're sure Mike and Nancy will not be too happy if a steamy affair develops.
After two seasons of some solid flirting and stolen glances, it seems like it's finally time for Hopper (David Harbour) and Joyce (Winona Ryder) to get together. Unfortunately, while Joyce and Hopper ended Stranger Things season 2 on a seemingly romantic note, things aren't quite as rosy when season 3 opens.
'Stranger Things' Season 4 trailer reveals the answer. Netflix released the first teaser trailer for 'Stranger Things' Season 4 and Jim Hopper (David Harbour) is officially back. Though, as the series creators point out, he's not doing all that well as a Russian prisoner. Jim Hopper is alive!
The Mind Flayer managed to wreak his havoc in the real world, thanks to the Russian subplot in Hawkins. The few scenes shown of the Upside Down occurred in a couple of episodes, as Billy Hargrove found himself wandering through there after his first confrontation with the Mind Flayer.
When his father remarried, Max became an easy target for his anger. After being reminded of his mother and her beauty by Eleven, Billy cried, showing deep down he still loved his mother. This memory and love for his mother, made Billy sacrifice himself to the Mind Flayer and apologize to Max for abusing her as he died.
Billy is driving in his car late at night when something hits his windshield, breaking the glass. He loses control and crashes into a tree outside a warehouse with a sign that says “Brimborn Steel Works.” At face value, the only spoiler here is that Billy crashes his beloved car.
After regaining his consciousness, Billy made the ultimate sacrifice in the season three finale. Billy quickly confronted the Mind Flayer and sacrificed himself to stop it from taking Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). A surprising act of selflessness from such a controversial character.
Underground, Hopper managed to defeat the Russian assassin, but was left inside the room with the exploding key when Joyce closed the gate to the Upside Down. Closing the gate successfully cut off the Mind Flayer's mind from its body and killed the Mind Flayer monster that had been terrorizing Hawkins.
