Though it was revealed that Jamal Lyon had moved away for good last season, Hakeem's absence hadn't really been explained on the show. Bella, was taken from the Lyon family when the SWAT Team came to retrieve her in "Civil Heads Unclean". After that she temporarily lived with the Dubois'. Diana Dubois did eventually tell Anika that Bella was perfectly safe.
After the Lyons lose Empire, Tiana tracks down Hakeem and tells him that she is pregnant with his child. They reconcile but when they are about to leave the house, Blake's father shows up with a shotgun and fires 3 shots at Hakeem, Tiana and Blake. In the season 5 premiere, it is revealed that Hakeem was shot.
He dies and his strong heart is then transplanted into ailing Lyon son Andre (Trai Byers) after Lucious approves the surgery. Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett) is on his honeymoon in the Seychelles and not likely to return often to the United States. Hakeem Bryshere Y. Gray) is ready to step into a bigger role at Empire.
TVLine claims that Daniels has become “a strong proponent” for recasting the role of Jamal Lyon, bringing in a new actor to replace Smollett rather than writing Jamal off the show altogether.
