Merle is a genetic pattern that can be in a dog's coat. The merle gene creates mottled patches of color in a solid or piebald coat, blue or odd-colored eyes, and can affect skin pigment as well. There are two general types of colored patches that will appear in a merle coat: liver (red merle) and black (blue merle).
Your mutt has a line of fur growing forward on the top of their back, creating the appearance of a ridge along their spine. Their fur is very, very curly. If left to grow, their fur becomes a big fluffy ball. Their fur is long on the front of their neck or around their neck, with a ruff or mane-like appearance.

Brindle is the term used for the 'tiger-striped' coat pattern found on dogs. Boxers or Greyhounds often spring to mind when this type of coat is mentioned, but many breeds can have these distinctive markings. Dogs born with this pattern in their coat carry a particular recessive gene.
Exposure to the sun is the most common cause of black spots in dogs skin and fur. Ageing is also known to cause dark spots in canines (age spots). Other than these rather normal causes, various skin conditions such as Acanthosis nigrans may as well be the underlying cause for black patches on the skin.
Ticking is flecks or spots of colour on white areas. It can occur on any white area on a dog, so long as the white is “proper” white ( i.e. so long as it's caused by the white spotting series and not by the chinchilla gene). Generally, ticking is heaviest on the legs and the muzzle.
Listen Now: Why Does Spot Have Spots? In dogs with multicolored coats, white areas have no pigment cells. When a dog is just an embryo, these pigment cells travel from the spinal cord to the rest of the body. A single cell then clones itself in a certain area, forming a group of cells to color the skin and fur there.

If you love big black dogs, you may also consider one of these breeds that are sometimes or always black: Labrador Retriever. Flat-Coated Retriever. Doberman Pinscher.
If you're wondering what causes black spots in a dog's mouth, it's likely the result of heavy pigmentation. These darker spots are the result of microscopic melanin granules and present as flat, pigmented areas found on your dog's tongue, gums and inside the lips and mouth.

A 2008 canine aggression study found that Rottweilers are average in aggressiveness towards their owners and other dogs, but tend to be more aggressive than average towards strangers. Rottweilers are also very territorial. If an owner cannot give the dog attention and exercise, he should not own a Rottweiler.
If raised with children, well-bred Rottweilers get along fine with them. They must be taught, however, what is acceptable behavior with children. In addition, some Rottweilers have a strong prey drive and may get overly excited when children run and play. Always supervise your Rottweiler when he's around children.
How to Tell if It's a Pitbull Breed
- Look at the size and ratios of the dog. Pitt bulls are two and one-half feet tall at the shoulder or shorter.
- Look at the dog's coat. The color is irrelevant.
- Examine the dog's head and neck. A pit bull's head is extremely wide from ear to ear, across the brow and from cheek to cheek.

In both cases, all the pats of the body have reached their full size by the time the animal (or person becomes an adult, so no, a dog's tail won't grow longer and longer as it ages. Two things control growth and they are our genetic makeup and our environment.
When your dog holds his tail up and still, it means he's wary. A high set tail, sort of a natural extension of your mutt's body, could be a hint to a scent hound ancestry. Perhaps your dog has a touch of Beagle, Fox Hound, or even Airedale.
