If you have a good attitude about it and use it as motivation to do better in school, being held back may actually do you a lot of good. By the end of kindergarten, kids should be able to:

Age five is a key year for supporting your child's reading skills. At this age, kids begin to identify letters, match letters to sounds and recognize the beginning and ending sounds of words. They'll start to have a basic grasp on the idea that words in a book are read left-to-right and top-to-bottom.
Obviously, pre-K is not exactly the same as elementary school. The children are not expected to sit at desks and do work all day. There are only so many waking hours in a day, and children that age need at least a few hours to just be children — more than just a few hours, actually.
