A DSc is a doctorate in science, and is not awarded for literature, law, divinity, or music, each of which has its own dedicated higher doctorate. The DSc is a higher doctorate than a PhD, in England. In some other countries, they're equivalent. Both get the honorific title doctor.
Doctor of Science (D.Sc) Eligibility
- Should have obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) degree from a recognized University.
- A candidate should have carried out post-doctoral research work. The total research experience requirement differs from institute to institute. It can be even five years.

Most institutions require that candidates hold an honors degree or a master's degree with high academic standing, along with a bachelor's degree with at least upper second-class honors. In some cases, you can also apply for a PhD simply on the basis of your master's degree grades.
India produced its first doctorate in the year 1904 when University of Allahabad (f. 1887) awarded D Sc to Annoda Prasad Sircar, about half a century after the establishment of the three premier Indian universities. Surprisingly, the first doctorate was produced by none of the three premier universities.
