Overview: SAN-supported legislation (H.B. 1264) has been introduced in Maryland to require the display of a single, rear-mounted registration plate for all classes of vehicles. Under current law vehicles must display two license plates.
Marylanders can display their pride in their home state beginning on Monday when the Motor Vehicle Administration rolls out the new Maryland Proud license plate. Governor Larry Hogan unveiled the new design last month, which prominently features the state flag.

The government implemented the new AP 39 A 0002 code to end the practice of people getting wrong resident certificates to get their vehicles registered with fancy numbers, he said. Under the new code, 1,000 numbers (most of them fancy numbers) will be generated every three days, he added.
In Karnataka, blank, A, B, C, D is used for commercial vehicles; T for tractors and trailers; E, H, J, K, L, Q, R, S, U, V, W, X, Y for two wheelers; M, N, P, Z for private passenger vehicles. G is used for Government Vehicles and F is used for KSRTC/NWKRTC/NEKRTC/BMTC buses.
My number plate (provided by the dealer) contains the same number. Recently, I got my RC from the RTO. The registration number on the RC is not the same as was on tax invoice. One digit is different (e.g. RC contains MH-01 AA 2234 instead of 1134).
The first two letters of the number plate indicate the state or union territory in which the vehicle has been registered. The third part of the number plate is unique and helps in identifying the vehicle. In case there's no unique number left to assign, then alphabets are used to replace the last digit.
The government of India has made it mandatory for all vehicles sold before April 2019 to have high-security registration plates (HSRP). Though this mandate wasn't being strictly followed earlier, governments and traffic police organisations of several states have now started penalising owners for non-compliance.
Most plates are G-series plates assigned by the General Services Administration, which include a numeric code following the "G" prefix, to signal the vehicle type. For example, "G10" is a compact sedan, "G31" is an ambulance, "G71" is a medium truck, cab and chassis and "G90" is special equipment.
The letters on the weight stickers show the gross vehicle weight when used as a motor truck: A=4,500 pounds and under; B=6,000 and under; C=8,000 and under.
How to Locate the Owner of a License Plate for Free
- Look for clues in the license plate itself.
- Go to the Department of Motor Vehicles with the license plate number.
- Look up the person whose name you were provided in the White Pages or online.
- Inform the police if a crime has been committed.
In many (if not most or all) states in the U.S. (for example, California) the numbers are assigned sequentially, not randomly, so you can figure out approximately when the car was registered (although not necessarily by the current owner) by looking at the number.

You can only register a motor vehicle in Maryland, or any other US state, if your are a resident of Maryland. If you have established Maryland residency you are legally obligated to apply for a driving license within 30 days. Tracking? Drivers licenses are not usually involved in the registration process.
