- Thoroughly rinse the dip from the surface of the medal, first in running tap water, then in distilled water.
- Degrease and dewater the medal in acetone.
- Allow the medal to air-dry on a paper towel.
Hanging Your Medals. Hang your medals from a display shelf with hanging hooks. Purchase a display shelf with hanging hooks that are attached to a wooden strip that runs underneath the length of the shelf. Medals with ribbons can be hung from the hooks, while medals that cannot be hung can be placed on the above shelf.
Medals can be sent at any time, and their packaging will be recycled, too. Proceeds raised from the recycling project will be given to people raising money through sport with official fundraising pages. When sending in medals, people can also be nominated to receive a donation to their fundraising page.
Some medals are perfectly designed for turning into drink coasters. Simply purchase thick felt or corkboard from an arts and crafts supply store and then cut out a piece of the material in the shape of the medal.
Position the bib and pin the one top corner. The first step is to hold the bib against you in the spot where you'd like to pin it. The best position is across your abdomen, not your chest. And you don't want it place it too low because it will move a lot if it's too close to your legs.
Wrap the medal in acid-free tissue paper or well-washed fabric, preferably undyed. Soft cotton and linen fabric such as sheets, handkerchiefs or teatowels are suitable, but other fabrics such as velvet should not be used because some contain acidic dyes, which can cause the metal to corrode.
DIY medal display: paint a long simple baseboard and nail as many long nails as needed. Paint some loonie store letters and glue them on. Take your hard earned medals out of the box or drawer and hang them up. Keep at it!
You may want to arrange medals according to another criteria, not military precedence. Organize them by date, rank or shape; line them up parallel with an in-uniform photograph in the middle; or arrange them in inverted triangles with a triangular folded flag taking up the bottom center third of the shadow box.
The classic, tride-and-true way of how to display your military medals is by wearing a medal rack on your uniform. Wearing your medals during a wedding, banquet, funeral, is a traditional and classic way to display your medals, if only for a short time.
To be fair, most shorter distance endurance races like sprint triathlons, 5Ks and 10Ks don't hand out finisher awards; most finisher medals are usually for completing a longer distance endurance event: half marathon, marathon, half Ironman, Ironman and endurance team relay, or an ultra marathon.

Recycle Your Old Trophies in a Trophy Recycling ProgramDonate your gently used trophies, awards, plaques, and medals and they'll recycle, reuse, and re-gift to non-profit organizations.
Just throw them out, don't overcomplicate things. Get your name off them (it's usually on an engraved plaque) and give them to Goodwill. Smaller kids sports clubs will often buy used trophies or medals to hand out. Please call your local YMCA or Girls and Boys Club to see if they take trophy donations.
But There is Value in Some Trophies, Medals and AwardsOlder silver medals and trophies made before about 1970 can be made of solid sterling silver or of silver-plate that is worth recycling. Silver trophies and other silver awards made in recent years are very thinly plated and not worth recycling.
Fair Game recycles sports equipment and clothing received from individuals, schools and organisations and donates them to underserviced communities. Another idea, if your trophy is in good condition, is to call the organisation that gave you the award to see if they will reuse it.
Here are a few awesome ideas for donating all that leftover tradeshow swag:
- Partner with Local Schools: Schools are a big recipient of donated swag.
- Partner with Local Shelters and Food Banks: There is at least one company at every trade show who has a reusable tote bag included as part of their giveaways.
Trophies and plaques are made of materials including stone, marble, plastic, and metal, and they cannot be recycled with curbside waste. You can also repurpose your trophies by making them into DIY crafts.
Many larger chain thrift stores, such as Goodwill or Value Village, accept donations of gently used awards in good condition. They clean and sell the old trophies to their customers. It's surprising what creative things people can make out of old awards! Unfortunately, many smaller thrift stores do not accept trophies.
You can find plastic trophies in thrift stores and you can use those. To give them a nice vintage look you can glue paper or pages from books on the exterior of the trophy. Then you can display it as such or stick some flowers in it and turn it into a vase. {found on site}.
In the very least, if any part of the trophy or award is made of metal, those parts can be removed and recycled at a scrap metal recycling facility.
