One major perk of art as an asset is that its value doesn't rise or decline with the stock market. Even if your stocks aren't performing well, your art investment may be doing great—good news for the savvy investor who wants to diversify a portfolio and minimize risk.
The materials needed to begin drawing are simple: a tool with which to make a mark and a sheet of paper on which to make it. Pencils and paper are the starting materials for most people.
To dress like an artist, you'll want to wear old clothes that you wouldn't mind getting paint on. Don't be afraid to mix styles or wear unusual colors. If you want to look like a stereotypical painter, you can even add a beret. For a more professional look, wear uncommon but subdued colors, like dark green or brown.
Here are the best art supplies you can buy:
- Best acrylic paints: Liquitex BASICS Set and Winsor & Newton Galeria Set.
- Best oil paints: Winsor & Newton, Gamblin, and Williamsburg.
- Best paintbrushes: Da Vinci brushes.
- Best canvas: Fredrix canvas.
A palette /ˈpæl?t/, in the original sense of the word, is a rigid, flat surface on which a painter arranges and mixes paints. A palette is usually made of wood, plastic, ceramic, or other hard, inert, nonporous material, and can vary greatly in size and shape.
1. Don't make your art supplies your carry-on items. Paint tubes wouldn't even be allowed as carry-ons anyway, unless they're smaller than 3 ounces and can fit inside a quart-sized zip-top plastic bag. (Most of my tubes are too large.)
The general advice was you should have no problems if you have MSDS paperwork on top of paints packed in an airtight ziplock bag, all in your checked luggage. Acrylic paint is not flammable, but there is no label on any brand tubes to state this … it's on the MSDS though.
Ballpoint pens, rollerball pens, gel pens and pencils are allowed, as are fountain pens with a single open cartridge in use, but any refills cannot exceed 100ml. Books, puzzles, games and stickers may be taken on board. Hat boxes, sports equipment and wedding dresses all constitute an item of hand baggage.
Don't take a chance. Carry the painting on the plane and store it yourself. Since it is not on the TSA's list of prohibited travel items, you can carry a painting onto a plane as long as it meets a few requirements. There are size restrictions for carry-on items, so you can only take small paintings on the plane.
Most art supply stores offer small quantities of art materials. And if you're worried that fresh materials won't be available where you're going, you can ship such items well in advance via UPS, Federal Express or the U.S. Postal Service as long as you specify “ground transportation.”
Many (but not all) artist paints are nonflammable and, if posing no other hazard, may be carried in carry-on and checked baggage. However, paint not marked nonflammable by the manufacturer could be removed from luggage by airport screeners. An MSDS will show if a paint or related product is a flammable liquid or not.
Most paints and paint-related solvents are regulated as flammable liquids and are forbidden in carry-on or checked baggage. Many (but not all) artist paints are nonflammable and, if posing no other hazard, may be carried in carry-on and checked baggage.
