In France, grades are out of 20. Ten out of 20, called “la moyenneâ€, is a passing grade. Yet contrary to the United States, where 50% is a low F, the moyenne is actually a relatively good grade.
Uniforms have not been enforced in French schools, a few exceptions (such as Maison d'éducation de la Légion d'honneur, les Écoles TUNON, and Vatel). The French education system offers an inflexible approach to education; one where the teacher has absolute authority, tough grading and rote learning are the norm, and high academic standards are demanded in reading, writing and arithmetic. The French don't expect children to have 'fun' at school.
The school year lasts 10 months. It begins in early September and ends in late June or early July.
The grading scale in France is 0 - 20 with 20 as the highest possible grade. No one ever receives a 20. Grades above 16 are rare. A grade of 10 is the minimum passing grade (D).
Spanish school hours depend on the school, but there are two main schedules. Some schools run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a two-hour lunch break from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Other schools begin at 9 a.m. and end at 2 p.m., the typical lunchtime in Spain.
The programme in collège includes French, maths, history, geography, technical education, art/music, physical education, civic education, some science, and at least one foreign language. The four classes, corresponding to grades 6 to 9, are called sixième, cinquième, quatrième and troisième.

French High School students go to school 5 days a week: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for a full day (lessons from 8:00-9:00 to 16:00-18:00) and in the morning on Wednesday or Saturday (depending on the school) from 8:00 to 12:00. On average the weekly timetable includes 27 hours of lessons.
The breaks are usually around two weeks each, apart from the summer holidays, which last about eight weeks from early July to early September. France splits schools into three different regional zones. Dates for the winter and spring holidays vary across the three zones.

The French grading system is on a scale from 0-20. To pass a subject you usually have to get 10 points. A student is considered to have passed if at the end of each academic year the average of his/her grades is at least 10.
The grades are named: CP (cours préparatoire), CE1 (cours élémentaire 1), CE2 (cours élémentaire 2), CM1 (cours moyen 1) and CM2 (cours moyen 2).
