There are several villages or small towns called Kingsbridge in Britain. However, the place in The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End is fictional. Kingsbridge Cathedral is fictional, though as I was writing the story I had two real-life cathedrals in mind: Wells and Salisbury.

Follett set it in Marlborough, Wiltshire; he chose that location because the cathedrals of Winchester, Gloucester, and Salisbury could be reached from there within a few days on horseback. Kingsbridge Cathedral as described is based on the cathedrals of Wells and Salisbury.
Follett was born on 5 June 1949 in Cardiff, Wales. He was the first child of Martin Follett, a tax inspector, and Lavinia (Veenie) Follett, who went on to have two more children, Hannah and James.
